As much as I dislike China, I’m hoping they can do to RAM what they’ve done to things like solar panels and EVs.

Just flood the market. Make RAM cheap again!

I’d quite like it if build quality were better than that for which China has become a byname tho’. I like my shit to last at least a decade

Fair point. I will say this, the low quality of Chinese goods isn’t entirely their fault. They enable it but it also comes from higher up.

I knew someone that was building some device, I forget was it was, and they were in China sourcing parts. That is when you see the game and they know exactly what is going on. You are after a specific capacitor, they will bring out 10 of the same product ranked in terms of price and quality. The 5 cent part, that will last 5 years or 1,000 hours, the 50 cent part will last 30 years or 10,000 hours.

Most producers will just go for the cheapest parts available to get the prices at the end down or to increase profit margins. China can make brilliant high quality parts, just those that control the pricing will always go for the low end and then blame it on Chinese manufacturing.

But also, many Chinese manufactures offer these parts knowing this, so it goes both ways.

If you think chinese memory will be cheaper than 5-10%, i have a bridge to sell you. They have no reason to sell it for really cheap, except maybe to gigacorps like Apple, but thats a different discussion (long term, strategic, guaranteed demand).

They will. Not directly but by manipulating the market and what will you so then? What the fuck are you actually gonna do about it? I bet you don’t even own a blunderbus.

It’s also made up. People keep anthropomorphising Sam Altman, as if everything he says isn’t just designed to either pump up OpenAI stocks or position himself better for salary/compensation or exit strategy.

“Sam Altman says-” is about as credible as “ChatGPT says”.

Being a CEO and the like really kills a person’s humanity. I really don’t like drawing a line were some people are human and others aren’t, but C-suite executives make a strong argument.

This data center build out can’t last forever, they are so overextended, obviously the government will bail them out afterwards, or either and or both parties. But that should at least halt these build outs for the most part, and lower computer costs, (although the manufacturers are likely geared to llm specific equipment and would have to retool, and the market can remain irrational longer than we (me, myself, and I,) can remain sane, apparently.)

It’s not AI, it’s an LLM model. It will never become AI, because llm models are incapable of thinking, of reasoning, it’s giving you an answer based on all the answers ever written they have on file. The hallucinations can’t be eliminated.

Don’t believe the hype. These data centers need to be destroyed, after due process by law. They will get bailed out by the government then agree to run social scores on us, that’s what is going to happen.

Confidently incorrect. It has reasoning layers. It creates new text based on the context of the previously written conversation. That conversation could be in the context of things that weren’t in it’s training dataset, and you still will receive some sort of an answer.

You don’t need a datacenter to run LLMs. A decently strong PC can run useful stuff already. The real fight is not anti-AI, the real fight is locally run AI (means of production you own) vs datacenter AI (means of production you rent, that can be restricted any moment).

It’s not AI, and it’s you that is confidentally incorrect.

LLM’s can never eliminate hallucinations. LLM’s are not artificial intelligence.

What we call hallucinations is operating on a lot of assumptions while you don’t have enough data, instead of saying “I actually don’t know what am I doing”. People do it too.

It’s not like that’s not a problem, sure, but the further this tech goes, the better it is at not hallucinating hard.

Hardware is the means of production and software leverages that. AI is part of that software suite working in tandem with hardware to be productive.

I would argue computers in general are both the means of production, as well as the radio networks like LoRa that can let them communicate without large infrastructure buildouts, intstead relying on truly neutral mesh connections with no central servers. Thus is covers both production and communication in one device.

Found the RAM-o-sexual. You just want to build one of those “assault computers”. The only thing they’re good for is CHILD PORN which means you LIKE children being raped!

You just sit around in your house all day daydreaming about the day someone tries to hack your network and you get to defend it, don’t you, you sick bastard!

Having a centralised and planned RAM economy seems a bit communist, TBF. It’s just the small detail about it all being to the benefit of one man that’s bothersome.

Yeah, fuck off Sammy. I was playing with Markov chains on my Core 2 Duo PC before OpenAI was even a thing, it’s my God given right to keep stochastic parrots at home, and weird cryptofascists won’t take it off me!
