Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Old laptop with non-funtional display... What do I turn it intoEnglish
31·17 days agoGood point.
Full disclosure: While I am very happy with my Kodi setup (see my other comment), I somewhat regret that I didn’t just fix the screen. I fixed the screen of my current laptop and I was surprised by how cheap and easy it was (even though I paid someone else to do it).

52·17 days agoKODI.
I have a laptop with a broken screen attached to the wall behind my TV. I love my Kodi media station. It might take a while to setup and customize but it’s worth it. I could use the default android TV, but it’s completely commercial and miserable. I use Kodi for: weather, video games (retroarch and steam), music (radio, youtube, mp3s), podcasts, tv shows, iptv, movies, youtube… I never leave my Kodi to use the android TV (barf).
Also it doesn’t need to be just a media station. You machine can probably run a variety of network apps or whatever else alongside.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Recommendations to watch Youtube on TVEnglish
6·2 months agoYes, there is a YouTube addon for Kodi. I came here to recommend.
It’s not perfect for sure. There are some things that are annoying or difficult. I get the feeling that the developer is constantly playing cat and mouse with YouTube. But overall it blocks ads and plays my videos so I use it every day. I’m watching right now…

9·2 months agoI think this is true of open source and open science more generally.
In the long run there’s no way that the actual desires of humanity can be out-developed by an extremely privileged group of front-runners, rent-seekers, enshittifiers, etc. (eg. proprietary software)…
Same. I tried a few other options from F-Droid/Droidify and Aegis was the easiest for me.
he could join in the conversation and have a very nice conversation and make friends.
Let me guess… You’re not from USA?
Yes, he’s doing something important by contributing to open source.

02·3 months ago.NET Core is likely to be around for a long time.
You wish.
I spent the last few years at my former employer working on transitioning our server-side business layer components to .NET Core so they could run in Linux containers. Someone else got to deal with the Kubernetes aspect - thank goodness.
Why bother? Just to keep paying MS?

Seriously if the world depends on some dumb company with some tiny number of people relative to the planet, then the world is dumb and fucked.
