browsers offload inactive tabs from memory anyway, unless you’re actively switching among 15+ tabs, they won’t be using as much ram
it’s safer to run it as a regular user and have topgrade ask for root access. With this config line it can ask ahead when starting, so you don’t need to babysit it:
[misc] # ... # Run `sudo -v` to cache credentials at the start of the run; this avoids a # blocking password prompt in the middle of a possibly-unattended run. pre_sudo = true
Underrated. We usually have a lot more to upgrade than just the main distro’s package manager.
funny I never had this specific issue with recursive behavior. I find it obvious that only rsync and zip are recursive by default, but I’m not sure why.
edit: ah you mean which ones are lowercase or uppercase, that makes more sense.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•GitHub Has an Availability Problem. Is It Time to Look Elsewhere?English
3·2 months agoUnpopular opinion, but most of that is duplicated information that makes sense to be duplicated because I’m not a machine that can scan the whole page and instantly get what I need.
Top right are action buttons, fork and stars on the center right let you see who else starred and forked the repo.
License information just makes sense to be in a repo summary, and it just happens that most license files are at the root and visible in the file tree.
I don’t see the top level stuff, you probably see that because you’re not authenticated, so github tries to “sell” itself for you.
I agree “releases” should be at the top though (it used to, and I use GitHub refined to bring it back), but having the latest one at a glance is nice and saved me a click many times.
yeah, I have a 65" TV connected and it gets comically large. I wouldn’t be nearly as productive without it.

linuxmemes@lemmy.world•You have lost CPU time privilegesEnglish
2·2 months agoFor most things. The only exception I see is if you have really over dimensioned memory, or have a very predictable load so that having the extra reclaimable space won’t make a difference.

2·2 months agoyeah, swap is definitely still useful and it gets used by the kernel well before the main memory is full

linuxmemes@lemmy.world•You have lost CPU time privilegesEnglish
6·2 months agoit’s not, because it takes swap usage into account, so you can benefit from swap without risking a frozen system

13·2 months agothe only times I had OOM killer kick in, the machine was already frozen for a long time trying to swap things in and out and whatnot. So I started using earlyoom - it’ll just nuke that memory hogging process out of existence before it takes the whole machine down.

6·3 months agoAs someone who said it before, I was recommending that to technical people having technical problems because of the stupid way windows does some things.
So while I can’t speak for anyone saying that, it doesn’t mean it’ll always work, or even that you’ll have less problems, but it does usually mean that it’s easier to figure out what’s wrong and how to fix it because the system is so open.
set it up with wrong address/credentials to see it failing, if it succeeds, it’s not using your relay server
I’ve seen the login warning above, but I don’t self host it myself, so I just logged in

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Most slopcode projects are abandoned and deleted within months of releaseEnglish
1·4 months agoRight, like I mentioned, it’s a scale problem and how people feel about generated code. Abandonware have always been the majority of repos, because people don’t have time or interest to maintain most things they create. We just have more things being created now (whether they’re any good/usable or not).

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Most slopcode projects are abandoned and deleted within months of releaseEnglish
4·4 months agoDisagree. Most projects are never “done”. Whether that is defined by the user or by the users, there are nearly always things to work on. Maintainers just lose interest or don’t bother. This is as old as open source and it has nothing to do with LLMs, it’s only aggravated by it.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Most slopcode projects are abandoned and deleted within months of releaseEnglish
911·4 months agoHardly an issue with generated code. You could say the same about projects before LLMs were widely used for code generation: “most projects are abandoned within months of release”. The difference now is the scale and how some people feel about it.
