linuxmemes@lemmy.world•The fact that you can’t run through Windows setup w/o internet and an online account is absolute bullshitEnglish
33·2 months agoYou can’t be serious, or you must not support Windows much.
I don’t think much of my workplace’s Windows desktop “engineer” but even they’ve put together (and keep updated) an image that can get from blank drive to fully installed, updated, baseline programs for our company installed, all settings tweaked to get rid of 90% of the dumb Windows bloat (have to leave the shit the execs like in place) in 30 minutes unattended.
The server builds my team oversees are 10 minutes setups, if that.
Like, I’ve been desktop support, and installing and configuring the department specific programs could be such annoying shit that you’d end up saving more time reimaging when something fucked up than to try and fix it, but the initial OS install was rarely the issue. Maybe for the first few days with entirely new hardware while we figured out the right drivers, but that was it.
Linux is leagues better than Windows, but some of this shit I keep seeing in these Linux communities is batshit. You personally not being familiar with Windows isn’t a reason it sucks, any more than people saying Linux is complicated is a reason for them to hate Linux.

1·2 months agoThat’s still rule of thumb on Windows. Push the updates into the install media in advance and save the trouble later. Guess since Linux updates tend to be easier they just stopped?

425·2 months agoIt could be done in 15 minutes with Windows as well, if you actually knew what you were doing. Hell, I’ll give you 40 minutes if you know what you’re doing and don’t have proper tools already setup.
Windows is a shitshow, but your personal lack of familiarity isn’t evidence of that, lol.
I’ve recently switched to writing my notes in markdown in a code editor, since I already have one open most of the time. vsCode for work (I do a lot of PowerShell), vsCodium at home, although I’m sure there’s better options.
My one gripe with Notepad++ is that I haven’t found any easy way to do dark mode with it. You can make the window “chrome” dark mode, and you can make general text background black and text white, but then that screws up the language specific and file diff themes/coloring.
There’s probably a collection of importable settings for that somewhere online though.

2·3 months agoSure, and that’s just as valid points against them as well. For my part at least, none of this is meant as some sort of death knell, or direct damning evidence that some software is some sort of terrible piece of garbage.
I just refuse to believe that someone would literally be entirely incapable of comprehending any of the reasons people dislike systems to only be capable of engaging with the criticisms in bad faith.

1·3 months agoThat only has impact on the security risk surface exposed for your own install and for troubleshooting on your own machine. The maintainers and other coders on the project still have far more space, complexity, and features to cover.
It’s not a death knell by any means, but still a valid cause for concern.

171·3 months agoAs someone who designs systems as part of his job, “it violates Linux philosophy” is a perfectly valid reason to hate something as critical and low level as an init system.
I think “hate” is a strong word, mind, but following consistent design patterns and constraining scope matters. The problem is that it’s one of those things that doesn’t tend to matter until shit hits the fan.
The scope creep exponentially raises the efforts needed to properly test, troubleshoot, secure, and just generally work with the project code. The unique design creates rough edges for integrations with other pre-existing systems and tools, while also raising the effort needed for troubleshooting when something goes wrong.
There’s also the whole “Chesterton’s Fence” aspect to a lot of it, where the project runner’s overall attitude has been dismissive of existing conventions and separation of functionality.
There’s a lot of perfectly valid reasons to dislike it. That said, I think full on hate is extreme for an aspect of the overall Linux “system” and “user experience” that most users never interact with. Like having an opinion on the order your BIOS handles things in.
For what it’s worth, they’re referred to as directories by command prompt and PowerShell (effectively the new Windows command prompt) tools as Windows as well.

3·3 months ago… So you’re smart enough not to out their name and username to us, but thought it was A-OK to do on a server?
Unfortunately that seems to be the pattern with a lot of beliefs right now, especially ones that the rich have vested interest in ensuring spread.
AI bros just updated their AI doomsday timeline again, from 2026 to 2030. At some point you’d think they’d see the parallels with the “world is ending on this specific day” cults and the constant timeline shifting.

Yeah, no. I’m not anywhere as anti-murrica as most people online, and I’m openly Christian. But church and state don’t mix.
The USA doesn’t have some special connection to God or Christianity. Celebrate God, from who all blessings flow. Celebrate the remaining freedoms still afforded to us by the nation of USA, despite our leaders’ strongest attempts to destroy them.
But render unto Cesar what is Cesar’s and unto God what is God’s. Don’t get it twisted.

linuxmemes@lemmy.world•Linux users after the try Windows 11 for 30 secondsEnglish
1·4 months agoSounds like your IT doesn’t know how to properly orchestrate updates.
Best way to do it in a Windows enterprise environment that I’ve seen so far:
- 1 Week: Install in the background silently and finish when the machine reboots.
- After the week, 2 Days: Warn once that the machine will automatically reboot in 48 hours.
- 12 hours before forced reboot: Pop up a warning in the corner with the countdown before reboot. Options are reboot now or warn me again in X hours. If you dismiss it without selecting, it pops up again in an hour.
If your Windows machine hasn’t rebooted in a week and a half, of course you’re going to have performance issues. What, you expect devs to avoid memory leaks?
That all said, the amount of Windows sysadmins who haven’t entirely given up on wrestling Microsoft’s update bullshittery is shrinking every day.
At surface-level, it’s a parody of Meta (Facebook company) for the dystopian future Analog Nowhere is set in. OP’s image is a “comic” from Analog Nowhere, showing the main character, girl, installing OpenBSD to her own brain. It’s a long, confusing, and wonderful story/setting.

Shame that it seems like people don’t realize you’re using a real issue someone opened on github as a copypasta.
