Yeah, Element on Matrix was the most promising thing I’d seen so far, but the ease of use and the community edition being capped at 100 peeps were the most concerning aspects for me. I might dig into it some more and see what a couple other volunteers think of it.

Copyright (and IP laws in general) is a means to capture parts of the market and is antithetical to producing a rich and vibrant culture. It artificially sequesters ideas away preventing a communal refinement and growth of those ideas. It’s commodifying nature corrupts creativity in pursuit of fiat.
I don’t like AI as a tool. It’s got a lot of problems, including it’s extortion of society’s creatives in pursuit of a diluted simulation of creativity–one which, as of yet, cannot produce something intrinsically new.
The solution to both of these is to remove the capitalist incentive and reprioritize society’s interests in the needs of the people. When creatives don’t have to rely on artificial limits of the market in order to stay alive and we can move to a system where creatives are free to create, not merely eek out moments of creativity between employ then they will be free to actually create–all of them, not just the lucky few. When the machines are decoupled from their own need to make money and are turned away from the simulacra factory toward covering essential, but boring tasks (and we’ve addressed the ecological disadvantages) then people will be further empowered to pursue creative interests.
Creativity should be bountiful and belong to society as a whole. It should not be a job–in part because we should build a future where jobs are optional. It should not be siloed into one mind for life plus 4 generations or trapped in an organization only to be checked out temporarily to boost profits.

The ball’s still in their court. They are welcome to change their mind, but they should conclude the immediate interaction. A “we have filled the position at this time. We’ll be in touch if anything changes.” message would be sufficient and easy to automate. They just don’t for … reasons.
Not remotely true. Having a job does not remove you from the job market. If I accept an offer for my 5th most desired position and a month later receive an offer for my 1st, I am well within my rights, means, and desire to just switch again.
Well then I’m still waiting for them to carryout their side of the bargain. I submitted an application and/or attended an interview and am waiting for them to make a decision. Obviously that ball’s not in my court otherwise I’d just tell them “I’m working here now!”
When I get a job, I do notify those that gave me an offer. If a company has already rejected me then of course I’m not emailing them back to say “yeah, well I’m rejecting you!”
My argument was one of stochasticism. A broken clock is right twice a day, but a machine that says to 100% of FB users “you aren’t happy” will be right more often than not.
Does that really need AI? The world is dystopian af, can’t it just declaratively assert “you are sad” and be right just about as often as some expensive inference operation?
On a “respond to an individual query” level, yeah it’s not that much. But prior to response the data center had to be constructed, the entire web had to be scraped, the models trained, the servers continually ran regardless of load. There’s also way too many “hidden” queries across the web in general from companies trying to summarize every email or product.
All of that adds to the energy costs. This equivocation is meant to make people feel less bad about the energy impact of using AI, when so much of the cost is in building AI.
Furthermore, that’s the median value–the one that falls right in the middle of the quantity of queries. There’s a limit to how much less energy a query to the left of the median can use; there’s a significantly higher runway to the right of the median for excess energy use. This also only accounted for text queries; images and video generation efforts are gonna use a lot more.
There are zero downsides when mentally associating an energy hog with “1 second of use time of the device that is routinely used for minutes at a time.”
I did not realize that nextcloud had a talk product. That actually looks really promising. I’ll have to see if I can setup a passwordless login through authentik or something to allow accessing the general channel.
Thanks for the rec.
