There is quite a bit of friction in the setup. After that, it’s smooth.

Because it hasn’t been mentioned:
IRC
Sometime also mentioned SimpleX, which I’m looking into myself, but have no experience currently.

I’ll recommend Home Assistant.

Understood. Wife and I went through this (now 20-ish years ago).
We ended up adopting, but stuff like this in the USA is quite heavily political unfortunately.
You mentioned North America, but I’m not sure how Canada and Mexico see this stuff.
I wish you much luck going forward, and encourage you to DM me if you’re curious about adoption.
Best to you!

I didn’t follow the link, and I’d rather not because I still don’t know what it’s about.
I’m happy to help, but you must meet people half way.

I don’t know what help you’re asking for, and I don’t want to click a random link to find out.
Help people help you. Describe what you need help with within the post.

Well, I guess it’s an agent.
What a response!

Incredible how software companies can be actively hostile to customers.
IRC is great. The challenge is picking a client for the family, and getting them set up. It’s not friction free.
Jitsi is good as an ad hoc communication tool, but it won’t replace a “chat / sms” tool. I took a small peek at SimpleX, and it looks quite complex. Not sure if it really is.

OVMS + a model that was built for it is far more responsive than llamacpp.

You can run an LLM, but it will be limited. Look into Open Vino Model Server.
I’d recommend a minimal install distro (Ubuntu server, Arch, Gentoo, etc…), then add the things you need from there.
Document every step. <— important

Bumblebee and BB switch are deprecated now. iGPU will default unless you run with primusrun.
You can also completely turn off the dGPU at the PCI bus to save power.

“old and obscure” tends to be where Linux shines. It’s possible the driver is already in-kernel. What is it?

Yesssss! It’s just the “weather”!
Muhahahaha!

Check some of the launch options.

Wonder if Europe’s “digital sovereignty” is having an impact.
I’ve seen a significant increase in the numbers of “I’ve finally switched!” posts to Linux groups. No clue how much that moves the needle though.

This didn’t format well when phone was portrait, but looked ok when landscape.

Professional use? I feel you if so.
I did graphics for screen printing in Inkscape, Krita and Gimp.
Some stuff was way better in Photoshop, but I had to boot back to Linux to print transparencies.
Yep. That’s the friction of which I was speaking.
