10·2 months agoLaws vary by state but iirc, California banned caging entirely, including imports. That said, cage free doesn’t mean quality of life.
I notice a huge difference with the more expensive eggs cause real free roaming hens eat lots of bugs and produce better eggs with deep orange yolks. Though, naturally scammers ruin that cause some orange hued eggs are dyed so buyer beware.

PC Master Race@lemmy.world•As publishers like Sony kill physical games, DRM-free store GOG preserves classic big boxes with 3D models and box art you can print and build yourselfEnglish
4·2 months agoI mean, it’s good to have a “legal” archive of things but there’s several lovely collections of box art and other things being archived across many services. I personally like how much Launchbox has collected, although I can’t use it anymore since going Linux. For PC, ExoDOS is also a great collection, too, as they actively seek out obscure DOS and Win 3.x games from the community.
At the end of the day, the only real way to archive gaming history is through emulation and piracy. Frankly the industry deserves as much.

5·2 months agoI’m partial to Tetris Effect, but I suppose it’s not that normal. In VR it’s amazing but there is a standard way to play too.

3·2 months agoUnfortunately yes, although it’s hopefully not commonplace for my ad bloated W11 start menu to take 10 seconds to open.

2·2 months agoThanks, I’ll take a look. First day of the semester is tomorrow so I need to get this finished, haha.

1·2 months agoHehe, yes, that and one drive shoved down our throats because they pay for it all. I can’t even get them to approve my Linux system to receive school email, have to do browser Outlook.
I’ll still consider these options if I’m ever back in doing academic research and going to conferences, though.

3·2 months agoWell… I don’t really have that option because of slide sharing and whatnot, the system requires pptx format, even for professors. Technically I’m not even supposed to use non-MS software, lol.
But I think you’re right. It’s getting to be a headache messing with OnlyOffice w/ master slides. Libre might end up being my only option simply because of its ability to work within my pptx centric work.

10·2 months agoI like and trust them more than alternatives (and keep their software available on my systems) though I’m using OnlyOffice a little more, at least for my presentations. Technically MS PowerPoint has more features than both, but I don’t really need them (and they fuck with compatibility and are resource heavy). Plus, my Linux made presentations load properly on my students’ Macs PCs and ipads, as well as in browser on the LMS (Canvas).
My feelings are, LibreOffice feels more like MS Office circa mid aughts, while OnlyOffice is more like modern MS Office and Google Suite, at least as far as the ribbon menu and default themes are concerned. I’m sure I can get LibreOffice to theme just as well but the default aren’t… great.

PC Master Race@lemmy.world•Crimson Desert Did So Well That Pearl Abyss’s Labor Costs Jumped 94% on Employee Bonuses, 1000+ Devs Got PaidEnglish
5·3 months agoIt’s a mixed bag. Their economy is getting really bad and they have less workers rights by a bit, which is saying a lot since the US workers rights are bad. But yeah, loyalty is still valued, as is a sense of real teamwork.
My wife gets the benefit of working in the US division, so she doesn’t have those problems. Her pay would probably be better at EA or Riot, but we like that her company isn’t… well, them.

PC Master Race@lemmy.world•Crimson Desert Did So Well That Pearl Abyss’s Labor Costs Jumped 94% on Employee Bonuses, 1000+ Devs Got PaidEnglish
121·3 months agoIt’s not that unusual, my wife’s at a AAA Japanese owned company and they do fat bonuses for everyone if a game does well (which isn’t a pay raise, but I get the desire not to make it permanent given the next game could flop). That includes people who aren’t even on the game, although I imagine it’s more if it’s your game.
But Japanese do it different from the US and people are expected to stay as long as they can, which is different from US job market. I imagine Korean and other non-US companies have pretty similar setups. Hell, even the US used to be like this before wealth inequality got so bad.

Linux Gaming@lemmy.world•Xbox PC and Game Pass games are being worked on for LinuxEnglish
4·3 months agoI’ve no interest in that service but I welcome support, anyway, because it’s a third party and will likely end up the best way to experience Game Pass subscriptions. I know Game Pass subscribers, and I’m sure they’re fiiiine with me evangelizing Linux s’more.

PC Master Race@lemmy.world•Microsoft just deleted Windows 11's 32GB RAM recommendation docs, as prices soar and it rushes to sell 8GB RAM PCsEnglish
62·3 months agoAnd CachyOS running KDE Plasma is the most RAM hungry setup. I took a Win 11 laptop with 8gb and threw Debian running Xfce and that’s using like 300mb of RAM lol
Keep in mind if you transition to Windows you will need to relearn a few things! Lots of your software might have issues and I sure hope you have Nvidia because AMD is straight to broken with all their open source code. Yuck!
Windows is just better (I use Windows 11 PRO BTW) because you get lots of background processes and there’s even a copilot that’s right about stuff sometimes. Microsoft even keeps a backup of lots of your data up in something called a Cloud, which I assume is good because clouds are up there in the sky like heaven!
I sure hope 2026 is the year of the Windows PC!

PC Master Race@lemmy.world•NVIDIA Confirms DLSS5 Is Essentially An AI Filter That Developers Can ControlEnglish
51·3 months agoThere has been machine learning for decades, but you’re right in that interpolating frames is quite different from the way generative AI works. Both DLSS versions rely on a form of neural network but the latest ones are diffusion models which are more controversial, for reasons I’m sure you know.
The most obvious bait to be was 1 hour install time. Windows 11 took 2 hours to install, CachyOS took like 5 minutes. I imagine Arch is similar, there is simply no way. Lol

Technology@lemmy.world•In a first, Google has released data on how much energy an AI prompt usesEnglish
7·1 year agoI usually liken it to video games, ya. Is it worse that nothing? Sure, but that flight or road trip, etc, is a bigger concern. Not to mention even before AI we’ve had industrial usage of energy and water usage that isn’t sustainable… almonds in CA alone are a bigger problem than AI, for instance.
Not that I’m pro-AI cause it’s a huge headache from so many other perspectives, but the environmental argument isn’t enough. Corpo greed is probably the biggest argument against it, imo.

Technology@lemmy.world•Goodbye, $165,000 Tech Jobs. Student Coders Seek Work at Chipotle.English
9·1 year agoSo, life of a humanities major like my wife. Actually, most majors that weren’t STEM.
If it helps anyone in this situation, you can try to bank on other skills. My wife is doing great now but got her start because of her bilingualism, and even that was only 35k a year. My sister did a little better with her music degree by pivoting to community manager, although in her case she had experience modding for a well known streamer. That was pretty good money right out the gate.
Point is, programming isn’t your everything, even if you’re leveraging something from your personal life.

Technology@lemmy.world•I BUILT A GOOGLE NEWS CLONE JUST WITH ANTI-CAPITALIST AND LEFT-WING NEWS SOURCESEnglish
5·1 year agoYes but it is really a Google News clone without random shit like “10 Anime Characters Who Ate Right but Still Died Young” or “50 Crazy Times Animals Did Taxes, #34 Will Blow You Away?”
I get an astonishingly junk food feed on my Google app, but you’re right to seek alternatives. It’s even peddling the propaganda site Whitehouse.gov.
I have used AI a little for Linux adaptation but I do want to caution overuse since it’ll sometimes give you really bad advice, like regarding important dependencies and such. Sometimes it cites info for a wrong distro or outdated info, so it’s not so much made up BS, just bad search results essentially.
