Mint is perfect for exactly that purpose. There’s a daunting marketplace of alternatives all with different specialties. Mint’s specialty is being as easy and newbie friendly as possible. Out of the box - it just works - etc.

The AUR with delayed official repos was precisely my issue with them. Then they put GUI helpers ontop of both pacman and the AUR which auto update and now you’ve got a real recipe for disaster.
Ubuntu will actively break itself via
snapdat like 2am on a Sunday.Fedora could not do a fully system update on a 1GB VPS because
dnfwould OOM.The dumbest thing I’ve seen Arch do in over a decade of using it is put RabbitMQ in its official repos while also rolling the latest version of Erlang which RabbitMQ doesn’t support.
No and neither does Manjaro which is less stable than Arch in my experience.
SteamOS uses an immutable system with A/B partitions. One partition is live but read only. Updates apply to the other partition which is hidden. Which partition gets mounted is swapped on a reboot after an update.

1·3 months agoNetnut is indeed an Israeli company. I dont think they’re getting arrested and prosecuted in US courts but their entire infrastructure has been shut down and they’ve been cut off from the US. So the business itself is killed.

I’ll give KDE a try again when they provide a way to track all of my settings via dotfiles. I tinker with shit a lot and I need the ability to track it all with a VCS. I’ve always kept KDE as a backup but its accrued so much config junk over a decade that its actually a pretty janky experience, and I’m not comfortable just nuking all my dotfules.

1·1 year agoNot much for open source solutions. A simple captcha however would cost scrapers more to crack than Anubis.
But when it comes to “real” bot management solutions: The least invasive solutions will try to match User-Agent and other headers against the TLS fingerprint and block if they don’t match. More invasive solutions will fingerprint your browser and even your GPU, then either block you or issue you a tracking cookie which is often pinned to your IP and user-agent. Both of those solutions require a large base of data to know what real and fake traffic actually looks like. Only large hosting providers like CloudFlare and Akamai have that data and can provide those sorts of solutions.

1·1 year agoCosts of solving PoW for Anubis is absolutely not a factor in any AI companies budget. Just the costs of answering one question is millions of times more expensive than running sha256sum for Anubis.
Just in case you’re being glib and mean the businesses will go under regardless of Anubis: most of these are coming from China. China absolutely will keep running these companies at a loss for the sake of strategic development.

3·1 year agoThis is what I’ve kept saying about POW being a shit bot management tactic. Its a flat tax across all users, real or fake. The fake users are making money to access your site and will just eat the added expense. You can raise the tax to cost more than what your data is worth to them, but that also affects your real users. Nothing about Anubis even attempts to differentiate between bots and real users.
If the bots take the time, they can set up a pipeline to solve Anubis tokens outside of the browser more efficiently than real users.

Idk about the mega neckbeard for opensuse. Every one I’ve met has been the most normal and least annoying. It just works and allegedly has some very nice convienence features.
Also the arch user could just as easily be copied to nixos.
