  • Early on I wrote a script for my user account to run df and save the output to a file, then a second script to read that file and if the drive was full send me an email.

First, it failed because it couldn’t send the email because the email service failed under full disk conditions.

Second, it failed because it couldn’t write the file to disk because the disk was full.

Third, it failed because outbound SMTP was blocked by my ISP.

I learned a lot about how well you can fail if you really put your mind to it. Now I have Home Assistant grabbing the disk stats for my machines and flagging anything over 90%.

  • I try to set aside time to do maintenance once or twice a week. I do a backup of my system using the standard backup tool then do the full upgrade of everything, starting with all the HACS and Addons, then the core OS stuff, then reboot. Then I test a few things and make sure it looks OK. I haven’t had any issues yet but I know it is a matter of time. I have a second computer I will be testing restoring onto shortly, so I will make that part of my process. No point having a backup if you haven’t tested it.

  • Yeah, they seem to be fairly good at bringing together lots of different sources of information and putting it together. They don’t seem to deal with differences between how things were done and how they are done now, so it can give you bad advice sometimes, but at the same time it can be useful for getting started and figuring out what to try.

  • Every time I see this I feel so sad. IRC was definitely not perfect, the security was crap and the user experience was awkward, but it was possible to have a fully open source self hosted stack. Discord is not a viable alternative in my mind.

Element/Matrix is a bit dodgy to me, with a lot of questionable stuff around original funding and development not to mention the amount of clearly illegal and immoral stuff on it, but at least you can run your own server in theory. I don’t know what the solution is, but it needs to have a lot of people on it to work so it needs to be easy and quick to get set up on, and ideally without the kind of verification stuff discord has.

  • I have to say the argument here is nutty.

They are saying that because the games are distributed with encryption and the emulators play decrypted games they are therefore primarily used to bypass the encryption. If that process was moved out of the emulator into a separate app then their argument would fall apart.

So it isn’t that the emulator can play the game at all. It isn’t that it can play decrypted games. It isn’t even that a pirated game can be played on the emulator without checking the licence. It is specifically that the emulator can take the prod.keys file and use that to decrypt the game.

By that logic if someone takes Suyu and moves the decryption logic to a separate app and makes a Suyu which only plays decrypted games then there would be no case for the DMCA takedowns on the emulator.

Is my understanding flawed here? If that is accurate, why have developers not done so? You could even have Suyu call the decryption program which is installed separately and presumably not fall afoul of this legal issue? I mean, the logic seems really limited to actually facilitating the piracy, not to emulating the operation of the console.

  • Oh wow, I just had a look at that, normally Grafana is used for monitoring things like server response times and internal stats. Using for a Garmin fitness device is awesome! I would never have thought of it as a good way to get that kind of data and see it visually.

Do you use it to see your training progress over time? Or is it more for seeing specific runs and comparing? How do you actually use it? Is it useful for you?

  • I have a proxmox host on a HP Elitedesk G3 with an i5 7500. In that I have a VM with HAOS and it runs like a dream. If something goes horribly wrong I can get remote terminal access from the proxmox interface along with rebooting and backing things up.

Also, you can actually run Grafana under HomeAssistant directly, though that does mean if HA is down then you also lose Grafana at the same time. IMO it is reasonable to use lots of stuff alongside HA but monitoring and remote access should be on a separate machine, and for that I have an old laptop (integrated battery so no need for UPS) and that machine is really only for managing remote access and monitoring.
