With borg or another deduplicating solution you could (probably) fit a year of daily in less space that the source takes. Of course depends how much the data changes over time. Highly recommend pika backup as borg desktop client. You can also easily do “smart” retention where only last week is daily, then weekly, monthly, yearly.
System can always be reinstalled, just backup your data, that’s the important part. Can recommend Duplicati for windows and Pika backup for Linux (borg frontend that makes it easy).

1·2 months agoGood luck! Sincerely.
I just made the decision, when I needed two more Zigbee Trådfri bulbs, and realised they are no longer available, that I buy a batch of used ones someone else is changing to matter or another system. I now have 6 spares along with spare buttons, which should last me a good while. I am postponing the switch to matter. Because currently my system just works.
But we need someone trailblazing. Hope it works out for you.

4·3 months agoI agree fully. But in this post’s comments people don’t seem to understand how RAM use works.
It should be used… It is good… Not using it is bad!

301·3 months agoThis thread is full of misconceptions about RAM use. It is normal and efficient for an OS to reserve memory for processes even if it not really used. This memory will be juggled around in case that is needed. It would be very bad for a modern OS if you somehow lowered your used RAM to near 0%. That would make the computer slower.
See for example this: https://www.linuxatemyram.com/
The same thing goes for Windows. It reserves RAM to be used. Like it should be.
Sure, Windows is bloated.
But posting screenshots of your task manager tells us nothing. If it uses 30% of your RAM at start time, that’s fine. Or not. Can’t really tell.

2·3 months agoI would recommend pika for easy backup, steamdeck (or even a windows pc) could have problems with cloud saves. If you want real backups you should set up deduplicated archives. This means you just install pika and click a couple times. You can set it to backup over ssh. The deduplicated compressed backup is often smaller than source data size even if it has years of archives.
Until you find out it’s not one.
It’s not, check it out…

Linux Gaming@lemmy.world•Hardware buzz on Windows, but not LinuxEnglish
6·4 months agoIt’s commonly called coil whine. You might want to tweak BIOS and try to disable C-states or such power saving features of the processor. The main problem is a physical problem in your motherboard. Having linux can change the sound but won’t fix this issue. Only real fix I see is to get a new mb eventually. But if Linux reduces it, go for it!
