I remember when companies hosted their own email. Giving up control of that was the beginning of the end.

I chose bazzite because it had all the gaming shit included and I wanted to get some experience with a known good configuration before I tried starting from scratch. So far I haven’t ran into any problems other than the install script someone made to get my 3d printer working with cura doesn’t work. I think I can manually put the files where they need to go but wasn’t able to figure it out when I tried a few weeks ago.
And here I am rebooting windows every few days because it gets unstable. Meanwhile the Linux VM I have running on that very same windows keeps on chugging like clockwork.
Yeah I tried doing it properly on my Bazzite install. It took exactly one round of Windows updates to bork it in a way that I couldn’t figure out how to fix. I had to start over.

1·1 month agoI’ve also been running Kodi on a raspbery pi and have been happy with it. Only issue I’ve had with the pi is I can’t get the overscan settings to work with retropie. But kodi has adjustments for the screen size so it works fine.

81·2 months agointuitive linux terminal
Which one is that? Powershell is way more intuitive than bash and I like bash.
If it was up to me they would. Instead they have 14 layers of menus you have to click through to find what you’re looking for if they have it at all.
The only inconvenient part about using the terminal is knowing the command to get into the configuration files. Once you’ve done it a few times it’s simple. People just don’t want to do even the minor effort to learn that which is why these days we’re stuck with all these shit applications you can’t reconfigure at all.
Oh no, I have to open a text file with a convenient list of all the settings for this application. How awful.

Anytime there’s an issue without bodycam footage, for any reason, the cop doesn’t have a say. His witness testimony doesn’t exist. His bodycam footage is his only acceptable testimony.
Is that how it actually works, or is that how you want things to work?

5·3 months agoWhy does everything need to cater to the average consumer? The average consumer is a fucking idiot, especially when it comes to technology. They don’t need to sell to everyone, they just need to sell enough to keep their company running and their people paid.

Most of my social circle is in tech and we’re spread across or have worked for basically every company in our city and that isn’t really a thing here.

1·1 year agoYou’re dead on about the 5% of what you learned thing. I’m on like my 20th tech job and pretty much every one has been different. What I learned in school has applied to only the most basic aspects of any of those jobs. Everything else was learning as I go and just generally understanding how PCs and software work. I have done fairly well with upward mobility (currently about as high as I can go without taking another leadership position) but I had to bust my ass to do it and it was only because I always stood out because of that so I would be first choice. There were never enough promotions/mobility to go around to everyone that was deserving.
