The psychological drive behind the urge to call something with a derogatory term is the same in both cases.
Meh. I find that the rhetorical urge to reduce a dichotomy to absurdly general commonalities is the pseudointellectual’s version of a slur.

Except here you’re not dehumanizing as much as working against anthropomorphization.

Yeah, sorry to be the bringer of terrible news. If these people aren’t actual accelerationists, they put on one hell of a convincing cosplay.

Did you know about Yudkowski’s Harry Potter fanfic that apparently doubles as the sex cult “rationalist” movement’s onboarding material?

Yeah yeah, let’s skip to the part where Yudkowsky (the “AI guru who Sam Altman thinks deserves a Nobel prize”) dropped out of eighth grade and is now running a sex cult 🙄
All of those TESCREAL loonies need a hard wedgie before they are permanently cut off from our attention.

Fault? I’d say you dodged a bullet by not getting that job.

They’re both on the fediverse at https://dair-community.social/ 🙂
Give 'em a follow if you’re so inclined.

10/10, no notes 👏

So, how is that pivot to “AI” working out for you, Shopify?

Fair distinction, and a good point about broader disinformation spreading.

cultinvestors
There, fixed that for you 🙂

Agreed, I just wanted to preempt any “well akshually, nuclear power is perfectly clean” discussions.
The “if something goes wrong” is certainly part of my reservations. There’s been more than one example of that happening in my lifetime, and one was too many.
Another concern is that we have no better idea to dispose of the nuclear waste than burying it really deep. That sounds like a good recipe to have it come back and bite future generations in the ass.
So yeah, clean and sustainable would mean solar/hydro/wind energy in my mind.

clean tech
nuclear fuel
Sorry, I know there are various perspectives on how “clean” nuclear power is, but those two just don’t rhyme in my mind. Especially not to the tune of “let’s extract uranium from sea water”.

If you run up against Wired’s paywall, there is a link in the first, readable paragraph to 404 Media’s openly available article, based on a joint analysis of the hacked Flock material.

I’m sure the tech billionaires have gamed out how that will actually work to their advantage.

I think it’s pretty clear that he doesn’t have any idea what the issues with “AI” are. It’s about relevance and threat models:
His proposal for banning “superintelligence AI” isn’t going to do a lick of difference against data centres causing shortages of drinking water and droughts; or against pollution skyrocketing globally because suddenly it’s more important to keep the "AI"s running than keeping to the Paris accords.
Those are real things that will realistically happen very soon if we allow the tech companies to continue unchecked. A super smart “AI” destroying us… isn’t. It’s all hype designed to misdirect attention from the real issues.
If Sanders had called the techbros’ bluff, he’d have said “Nice Terminator fanfic, now let’s shut you guys down on factual issues, right now.”

To be fair, he’s sharp as a tack but also 85 years old. I can understand if he doesn’t entirely grasp the “AI” grift, or the real limitations of the technology.
Still, like I also posted, would be nice if he could’ve kept his sights on more currently relevant issues like data centres.

I’d honestly expected Sanders to form a more grounded, practical threat scenario of the “AI” industry. Less SciFi woo, more environmental impact and disinformation crisis. Those are among the present and concrete dangers that need to be regulated.
The proposed punishments sound fair, though. Whether the fancy ouija board develops a mind of its own…? Meh, not holding my breath for that one.

Oh great, they’re going to make rules based on Coxon and the other TESCREAL doomers’ Terminator fanfic, rather than the foot long list of actual real world issues with the Magic Eightball.
At least they’re consistent in their exploitation.
