I found that with swap the applications would slow to a crawl and then basically lock up entirely until I hauled my ass over and manually power cycled the machine.

Bah, 56 seconds ought to be enough for anyone
I manage a cluster that makes heavy use of SSDs in RAID10 configuration. Those things are constantly degrading and having to be swapped out. I’ve started a drawer of faulted drives that I don’t have the heart you throw out.

3·2 months agoThough I suppose most of it was already copy pasted anyway.
Wtf kind of code are they taking about? Like first year “pomodoro tracker” projects? These days the only thing I really copy paste are Linux commands, and even then
We just had to wait for windows to get too shitty for average gamer

pics@lemmy.world•These wonderful people are behind LibreOffice, offering a free alternative to Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Excel. Remarkably, most of them contribute on a completely unpaid volunteer basis
10·2 months agoI love them!! LibreOffice rules so much. I’m so happy it exists! Thank you to these heroes of FOSS. 🫡
I used to consider LibreOffice Calc an “alternative” to excel and Google sheets, because I just had so much experience using them.
So while I liked LibreOffice, it was more on an ideological level. I used the other spreadsheet software much more often at work.
But then I just “forced” myself to use Calc exclusively and pretty quickly got used to how it works, until there was no friction at all.
Didn’t really think much of it until someone at work sent me a link to an online excel spreadsheet and it felt clunky as hell compared to what I was used to. I couldn’t figure out how to do the simplest thing, had to look everything up, and just felt frustrated by the whole experience.
Anyway, it’s funny how my old alternative became now my main. Kind of reminds me of my journey from Windows to Linux, really.

PC Master Race@lemmy.world•Gaming hardware costs have gone up 16% just in 2026, says US analyst, and Samsung says the AI bubble behind it all is only going to get worse in 2027English
1·3 months agoYeah my enjoyment peaked around the Dal-e days making crude stories and pictures. I lost all interest when it moved beyond that and kind of assumed other people were just late to the party and would get sick of it shortly after (minus your fanatics of course).
But yeah some people seem to be just infinitely fascinated with seeing what it generates. I get that a service that can surprise you is fun, but personally it just made me more interested in making my own stuff stuff and seeing what other people were (actually) making.

2·3 months agoI’ve done both and I guess I shouldn’t call those both boycotts but people get it, like “I boycott uber because they’re awful” and “I’m using the BDS list to boycott businesses that tacitly support Palestinian genocide.”
Not the same thing but similar behavior. But then I would still try to avoid businesses that tacitly support genocide even if it was just me, so it feels the same.

6·3 months agoIf i thought my boycott would have any effect …
Respectfully, that’s where you’re going about it wrong imho. You boycott because you personally don’t want to support something.
It has about as much impact as voting in a representative democracy.
If you want to actually affect anything anything bigger than yourself you’ve got to actually become a nuisance. Direct action, campaigns, etc…
Buy anyway! (Haha sorry) The other commenter wasn’t even talking boycotting, just thinking about if you really want to buy something. It’s not a bad idea to think carefully before buying anything.
Do what feels right for you, though. It’s just a game. Just as OS. One is a toy, the other’s a tool.

71·3 months agoLol I can’t even disagree.
I stopped bothering reading specs because my gaming pc (bazzite—yeah I know, I’m extremely lazy) just runs whatever I throw at it. I feel like you’d have to very aggressively develop a game exclusively for windows too manage to get it to not run on Linux these days.
Why you’d dev a game for office computers I’ll never know but we’re all different people making up a beautiful kaleidescope of humanity I guess.

75·4 months agoI’m sorry to hear that and I don’t mean to rub it in, but your local infrastructure isn’t my problem. I do hope it improves, though.
Just for balance there are plenty of things about my region I hate, like our shitty voting laws and piss poor democratic representation, but you wouldn’t catch me complaining to people who enjoy more direct democracy.

Now about all those CCTVs
I’m sceptical this is genuine… it sounds like cope to me, but it’s interesting… Anyway, I appreciate my experience isn’t universal. So what Linux alternatives do you mean, like BSD and stuff?
I try to keep an open mind about people preferring the Microsoft stack, but from the first time I used a terminal on Linux I was sold. I could never go back.
I still do support for people who use Windows PCs, so I’ve got to see how it’s changed over the years. Personally I don’t know how anyone puts up with it.
It seems like Windows keeps getting worse as Linux keeps getting better… like… do you enjoy using Windows 11? Does it feel good to you?

I don’t love this analogy. You’re comparing something out of living memory with something that’s still actively going on right this second.
I think it’s always worthwhile to at least mention it, or else you give the impression we’ve collectively moved on.
