  • First find a way to track your costs. Measure how much it costs to give it away (to your self and people that support you starting it as a buisness). Do market analysis based on those number. How much do you need to support both your operatiinal costs of hosting and devoloper time paid with a fair wage, and what does compare to how much consumers are currently paying. If that looks good invest in an accountant and lawyer to see what the buisness plan viability might look like and set up a LLC. From there look for partners that can help you create a sustainable buisness and fill in skill gaps you dont have, or hire out the rest.

    Thats it.

Even better make it a community coop so that the skilled labor and community can have actual ownership in the org to help balance out thr risk and encourage litteral buyin.

  • I use VMs for OS isolated and hardware isolation. I run containers on top of OSs for apps.

That said I use Harvester so I can run containers on bare metal AND VMs as containers.

Even on one bare metal I do this, so I can spin up a test VM of harvester to confirm configs. If you one node is super beefy a neat trick is to have VMs running a cluster so you can have a kind of high availability even if your infra is a single point of failure.

  • Version are pinned in code. Helm chart, image, RKE2 and OS. Let fleet/argocd/helm handle most upgrades. Infrastructure/management upgrade (Rancher app or rancher cluster components, Forjeo, Harvester, keycloak, etc) get a dedicated virtual testing cluster spun up and manual and automated tested (I don’t have good virtual networking testing yet once I do KubeOVN only that might be truly possible). Renovate runs to automatically update all the version numbers.

Checks every 15 min for apps, every hour for infra.

Id love to try to get a web hook from my security scanner to push for an update sooner if a VEX item is identified, but shrug

Mind you, I like running my homelabs, the idea it serves anything useful is just to prove I can lol. They go down all the time too because I’m monkying with the hardware config ALL the time.
