PC Master Race@lemmy.world•Palworld publishing chief worries early access has 'lost its meaning' as the rise of 'hyper-casual' gaming culture means people often don't understand what they're getting intoEnglish
281·1 month agoPeople using early access software as if it’s complete has been a thing since forever.
PuTTY still isn’t v1.0 and that’s been around 27+ years. Hasn’t stopped it becoming the defacto SSH/SCP client for Windows.
Compiz never made it to v1 and was used by basically every Linux desktop environment back in the day.
Neovim, MAME, mpv, fzf; same story.
It doesn’t matter how much a developer stresses something isn’t complete yet, that is meaningless to the adoption rate by users.
Same thing with games. If anything, I prefer things the way they are vs countless games never seeing the light of day because they’re not “done”.
It’s on the user to accept the state of release, not the developers, not the platform, not the package manager.

PC Master Race@lemmy.world•Witcher 3 devs actually used the game’s most popular mods for the remasterEnglish
39·2 months agoEvery recent remaster that saw passionate and committed modders called up and paid to canonise their contributions have been all the better for it. Aspyr releases come to mind.

3·3 months agoIt’s some variation on UwU OwO 3w3 which, as far as I’m aware, imparts simply “cute” from Asian cartoons/animation.
I’m equally baffled by it but I was there in the beforefore times when smileys were visualising human faces.

37·3 months agoI’ve been desperate to get into VR (both as a player and a developer) but being tethered wasn’t for me - it was the biggest gripe I had visiting VR experiences etc. And I dislike Meta on a philosophical and moral level.
So yeah, $1500 for “not Meta” is fine by me.

linuxmemes@lemmy.world•Arch Linux is a Tamagotchi for IT nerds
681·3 months ago100%. I’ve got servers running arch for the past 5 years or so and they’re the most stable systems I’ve got. I got so tired of the painful upgrade paths on “stable” distros so decided to switch a server to a rolling release.
After I found arch got security patches into the repos faster than the stable distros could backport, I decided to switch them all over.
I’m even a mad man and have them self update with a script that checks informant (or something, can’t actually remember) for installed packages against news. If no installed packages are found in news, it continues with the scheduled update.
It’s glorious.

Technology@lemmy.world•Microsoft Needs Windows Lite, No telemetry, no spying, no ads, no AI, no .NET, to retain gamers and developersEnglish
9·4 months ago.NET is arguably one of the better things to come out of Microsoft. The CLR only runs when a .NET application is running so it’s not bloat, and it’s pretty lightweight as far as a VM goes with JIT. It’s well documented, has public standards, is cross platform, and released under MIT.
I’m a Unix/Linux greybeard so I’ve no real skin in the game. But given how C# has become the defacto cross platform game development language of choice for both Godot and Unity engines, .NET deserves a little credit.

Technology@lemmy.world•PlayStation 6 bill of materials nears $1,000 as RAM shortages worsenEnglish
1·4 months agoNow we know why they stopped shipping games to PC. They need to prep their user base for a hardware price that will have users consider just buying a PC instead, taking away the “I can play the PlayStation exclusives on PC anyway” argument.

1·4 months agoWasn’t it legit as early HDDs needed spinning down before the power could be cut?

So much this. There’s only concept art on the website. If this is ready to playtest then there really should be a video and screenshots of the current state of the game.
Otherwise it gives bad vibes like those weird NFT “MMOs” that never showed what the game actually liked like on their website. Like one wants to trick players into downloading rather than enticing them to by showing off the possible experiences.
