  • You make some good arguments so I’m not attacking you at all, just my thoughts on your points. These short renewal times are getting to the point of ridiculousness and creating another point of failure with little time to do anything about it. I find these super short certs less than useful, create many more possible problems, and not really necessary except for a small set of circumstances. And I have been in IT as a web dev/sys admin/systems architect for over 30 years now.

    • If a private key leaks you’ve likely done something wrong. Practice better key management and don’t be stupid
    • Updating certs to keep up with new crypto standards is useless. For one they don’t change that often and if there is a pressing reason you can’t update earlier.
    • Yes the processes have to be automated which is not a bad idea at all. But you are completely relying on the service to not be down and that something on your end hasn’t also broken. Anybody that hasn’t ever been a sys admin has had several automated process die for no apparent reason.
    • This could actually be an issue but totally out of your control. This is only relevant if you domain hop frequently and if your that worried about security, you aren’t doing that.

  • No but it was definitely implied by the headline. A word prediction machine, no matter how useful, is never going to be an AGI. And don’t get me wrong, I find LLMs very useful for lots of things. But the model they are chasing is never going to be an AGI, no matter how much info you feed it.

I also wouldn’t predict against an LLM helping to create an AGI either. I have this analogy in my head…

I hammer is a useful tool. It can do many things. It can even put a screw into a piece of wood through a very brute force method. This does not make a hammer a screw driver. Could you use a hammer to help in construction of a machine to build a screw driver? Most definitely, likely even required.

Anybody suggesting they have an AGI built from the current process is a tech bro looking for funding.

  • Two main problems with data centers. Power and cooling. In space the power is doable. The cooling is a major pain in the ass and always has been. There are only three ways to get rid of heat. Conduction, convection, and radiation. The first two don’t work because of the vacuum thing. The third is horribly inefficient. Just look at the ISS and the giant fins that only dumps about 70 kW of waste heat through radiator “wings” that weigh several tons. A single rack in a high density compute rack can generate 100kW by itself.

So yeah given the expensive and how inefficient it is, it’s a terrible idea.

Edit: I’m a system architect so dealing with data center heat is something I’m familiar with.

  • I don’t think so. I think he’s blaming the “solution” as being a stop gap at best and painful for end-users at worst. Yes the AI crawlers have caused the issue but I’m not sure this is a great final solution.

As the article discussed, this is essentially “an expensive“ math problem meant to deter AI crawlers but in the end it ain’t really that expensive. It’s more like they put two door handles on a door hoping the bots are too lazy to turn both of them but also severely slowing down all one-handed people. I’m not sure it will ever be feasible to essentially figure out how to have one bot determine if the other end is also a bot without human interaction.

  • In principle I agree with you, but as a network guy, somewhere, between you and the server you are connected to, the bandwidth is shared. The only question is just where and how much bandwidth (well network throughput) there is to share. I work for a large university and our main datacenter has 10GbE and 25/100GbE connections between all the local machines. But we only have about a 3-5gb connection out to the rest of the world.

Now don’t get me wrong, I’d 100% rather have a symmetrical fiber connection to the ISP than something shared like radio or DOCSIS. I used to live in a neighborhood where everyone had Spectrum and about 5-6 PM the speed would plummet because cable internet is essentially just fancy thinnet all over again. Yes I’m old since I used to set up thinnet :)

PS: I would kill for $70 fiber where I am now. Used to have it but we moved to the sticks and I miss it terribly.
