Same here! I started with Lycoris back in 2003, I’m very experienced with many different distros. The universal blue distros (Aurora, Bazzite) are my preference these days. You get the benefits of the atomic host and they aren’t actually restrictive at all once you get comfortable using containers for software that you can’t easily install with flatpak or brew.
It’s a good question, and it has a definitive answer: Distrobox.
https://docs.bazzite.gg/Installing_and_Managing_Software/Distrobox/
You can also run applications from within the container. I have a Debian based container (but you can use whatever you prefer, I just happened to find a guide for getting jetbrains IDEs working well with a Debian one) with the Jetbrains suite installed and all of the development tools I need.
Since getting comfortable using distrobox, I prefer to use it for dev environments even when I’m not using an atomic distro. It doesn’t add any additional friction.
The danger and the stakes are not what is being compared, though.

But the AUR is (was?) the much tauted reason to use it! I had a pretty bad time with Arch and its derivatives, but I wonder if Arch + flatpak + distrobox (steamOS, basically?) could be great these days. Probably.
Yes! I used it as my main distro for a period. These days I’m all about Aurora/Bazzite, but I think I’d like to try it again.
Man, I tried Sabayon twice (both a long time ago) and quickly regretted it both times. In my experience, it was extremely fragile. I had used Gentoo at the time and had a mostly good time with it, and wanted to try something that set it up easily.
Yes! I’ve done both. I played Castle of the Winds in DOSBox running Windows 3.11. What have you used it for? If it’s Castle of the Winds, we’re officially friends. Otherwise, eh
I’ve used a windows version of Wine to play a 16 bit Windows game before, so it’s already kind-of a thing.

I wonder if being made aware of the extensive NSA spying actually had a suppressing effect on taking action itself. It was kinda scary. Overwhelming. “Best not to think about it” kind of stuff.

I wonder if Piefed users have pie days
Yeah, it’s worth remembering that something similar happened on the threadiverse a while back. I think there is now some automated detection and removal enabled for most significant instances.
