Yeah i was also fan of apps like Mobdro which featured 24/7 feeds of TV shows or even movies by genre. That’s the initial inspiration i went with.

I host a bunch of small web sites, i guess the most unique is one i made recently about the “Interface Series” (also known as “Mother Horse Eyes”). It’s a big old web fiction that was published (10 years ago) as a series of 100 reddit comments in unrelated threads. Just recently someone recorded an audiobook of the whole series so it motivated me to finally get this project done. Basically it’s a place where you can listen to each post, and read it karaoke style, and it also links back to the original reddit comment. I’ve also made it so you can listen to each of the interwoven narratives as a standalone audiobook. It is hosted here : https://interfaceseries.art/ .
Other than that i am an avid collector of old content from French television like tv shows, old american series dubbed in French etc… so i have a couple of sites where i show this collection. Can’t really link to it as it’s not really legal but it’s a lot of fun. I love the feeling of “linear streaming” as opposed to VOD : i love turning on the TV and watching whatever’s showing at the moment rather than scrolling endless lists of content so most of my websites work like that. I open-sourced the tech, it’s not much to look at, just a lighttpd server and some client-side logic to determine what’s showing at the moment on each channel.
My ultimate goal would be to create a “French TV from the 90s” simulator where, depending on what day of the week and what time it is, you get what would probably be showing at that moment on French TV in the 90s. It’s paused right now as i negociate with some guys who digitized a bazillion TV magazines from that time, and their data would allow me to get a really high def simulation.

I would imagine that this is a good way to get rid of the initial employees who really believed they were doing good. Now if you stay after this, or if you get hired after this, they can be confident that you have no moral issue with what they are doing.

I’d say that’s more like trying to solve mental illness by making it illegal to exploit and profit from it
This is completely separate. It’s something they ask when you apply for a job with them.
This is actually standard gdpr / data protection verbiage. It means the company cannot use your data for its own purposes, only to provide you services you agreed upon. Selling your data to a third party, or sending you marketing emails you didn’t subscribe to, isn’t “providing you with services or products” so it is explicitly forbidden.
I’m not sure what you mean by this. Yes I am aware that an open source project needs developers.
Actually I have ! When I started this setup all I had was a bunch of reclaimed screens and the specs were all over the place.
My config is close to 15 years old and I’ve never had any issue with it. What are those horrific things you speak of? How do they affect me? I have no intention to migrate away unless I’m forced by circumstance.
I feel GUIs complicate everything. You need graphics drivers and a display server and a compositor and a window manager etc… it’s a pain and in the end you still have to open a console to type in commands for your actual self hosting. Not worth the effort in my opinion, and it’s better to bite the bullet and get used to the terminal and ssh early.
I recommend using something like tmux or screen, so you still have basic comforts like tabs and multi task. Once you get used to it you can configure it and add themes and plugins if you like. A modern tmux setup really feels like a desktop except everything is faster and it barely consumes any resources.
This makes me think of the shrike in Hyperion! Great work op thanks for sharing
Wtf you on about son?
