I thought that was a weird opener, but then they bring up the same thing a second time halfway down the article.

Amazing that somebody can write an article citing Cory Doctorow while missing literally everything has ever said about AI

7·6 days agoI’ll be happy to check back in a month to see which toxic cesspit provides the best approximation of Photoshop-tier quality.
My bet isn’t with the Redditor whose profile reads “To AI haters: AI is just a tool… Adapt.” But their attitude is roughly as toxic as Adobe if you strip away the PR, so let them fight I guess

3·18 days agoConsidering it’s the domain for Slovenia, it’s understandable you’d assume L instead of i… Had double-check it myself.
Wonder how many .SL domains are out there and whether they have similar names for a much lower price.

Technology@beehaw.org•Trump Sparks Suspicious Gold Rush For .SI DomainsEnglish
13·18 days agoThere’s some cleverness behind it. The government is legally mandated to only refer to AI as SI, so that will theoretically boost the value of the squatted domains among the people obsessed with the stuff.
Even a gold rush can enrich a shovel salesman.

3·20 days agoOpenAI is a megacorporation that pays people to read through your conversations, and flagged the killer’s account for threats of violence, but failed to follow up.
Can you explain how OpenAI is not guilty of negligence when they sell a product that promises they are careful?

12·23 days agoWhat’s up with this deflection and corporate defense?
This article is all about negligence. OpenAI’s negligence.
If you believe they should escape criticism, could you please explain why, rather than using sarcasm?

Technology@beehaw.org•OpenAI hacked Medicare portal, Australia Prime Minister Anthony Albanese saysEnglish
3·24 days agoThe prime minister was asked if Altman apologised.
“Yes, he clearly … we can get into word games, but he clearly accepted that the company had not done good enough,” Albanese said.
Yeah, don’t worry, Americans don’t know what he’s actually saying half the time either.
Albanese said the incident was complex and unprecedented.
“It was a shock that it occurred because it was real and serious,” he said.
“But it also, I think, was something that had been predicted, including by the AI companies themselves.”
Right again. If only they could figure out what to do about it.
Australia is one of the countries banning teens from social media. Shouldn’t they be able to ban OpenAI from their country too? Just give Sammy and Co a restraining order? Certainly makes more sense than the social media stuff, as companies can actually be held liable for things they intentionally do.

But if you want to call the article “misleading” and “utterly ridiculous” to criticize them, then that’s over the threshold from odd opinion to bad prescription

He co-founded opposition PAC Building a Better California, which Fortune reported had raised more than $100 million as of August 2026, and told the New York Times, “I fled socialism with my family in 1979 and know the devastating, oppressive society it created in the Soviet Union.”
Yeah socialism is terrible. With its constant surveillance panopticon, and oligarchs who are above the law, and… Wait that’s just America.

6·26 days agoAlternatively, tech companies have run out of things to monopolize besides human intelligence and creativity themselves, and can apparently offer a pale imitation.
When Sam Altman says he needs his product to think on his behalf when it comes to raising a child, is he lying or is he really that seduced by ChatGPT? I don’t think it really matters.

4·1 month agoAgree with the first paragraph. Jacob Coxon (allegedly not a grifter) claims Anthropic and OpenAI are racing towards evil superintelligence, so both companies should be in trouble by now and their CEOs should be imprisoned or…
… What’s this? Coxon is now calling for the companies to regulate themselves? The ones he doesn’t trust? That’s odd.

Within 24 hours, Steam updated their launcher to be as fast or faster, without announcing it.
(Insert “look what they need to do to match our power” meme here)
I think I would stick with the tried-and-true product, instead of the new toy from people who say “coding is hard,” because the latter’s attitude is a red flag for quality.
