This guy stole my brain and dumped out all the thoughts I have.

I bounced around a bit after Storj decided to hate consumers and institute massive minimums.

I’ve landed on Backblaze B2, S3 compatible. Add others have mentioned, doing a shared NAS 2 NAS hookup with a friend or family member is a nice ideal way to do it without monthly fees.

I use Borg backup from my PCs to a NAS (QNAP), and from there using the built in backup software to go off-site. My self hosted PCs will mount NAS drives directly (like immich and audiobookshelf) and those are also in the NAS off-site job.

Reolink stores to a SD card with the option to upload to FTP backups.

I suspect a big 128 gb card would be good enough without off-site storage.

I know nothing of the full conversation, but I read the"meltdown". I sort of sided with the melt down guy. Everything he said there was reasonable, albeit slightly verbose.

IDGAF about the whole thing so it might just be that the final post was fine, but the rest was not :shrug:

I’m getting fomo on that 3rd reality device. Kicking myself for buying 2 pine speakers now.

I use Sonos speakers to play music, so the device is not a speaker for music output. It’s just for commands received and response. I read that it doesn’t support playing music yet. The speaker is clear for voice though.

I just set two of these up. I’m not a HA guy so my HA server only has these assistants, my Sonos system, and Music Assistant set up.

I’m still fussing through setting up tasks, but it’s slowly turning into Alexa Jarvis.

I have it set up to play, pause/stop music from music assistant with a really hacky yaml script.

It can tell me the weather forecast.

That’s all local processing with Whispr(stt) and Piper (tts).

For those who want the “tell me the tallest mountain in the world” type of support, the answer is cloud llms. I tried ollama on my PC, but it’s just too slow. I have an opencode go subscription and that works pretty well with deepseek-v4-flash. You can also use a standard open ai api key with one of the nano or micro models.

It works, not quite as good as Alexa, but it’s not bad.
