  • Yes, it’s a command from apt-get that apt only passes through:

    –auto-remove, --autoremove
If the command is either install or remove, then this option acts like running the autoremove command, removing unused dependency packages. Configuration Item: APT::Get::AutomaticRemove.

    –with-new-pkgs
Allow installing new packages when used in conjunction with upgrade. This is useful if the update of an installed package requires new dependencies to be installed. Instead of holding the package back upgrade will upgrade the package and install the new dependencies. Note that upgrade with this option will never remove packages, only allow adding new ones. Configuration Item: APT::Get::Upgrade-Allow-New.

    -U, --update
Run the update command before the specified command. This is supported for commands installing, removing, or upgrading packages such as install, remove, safe-upgrade, full-upgrade. This can be useful to ensure a command always installs the latest versions, or, in combination with the –snapshot option to make sure the snapshot is present when install is being run.

  • Ubuntu is based on Debian, but it differs in quite a lot of ways.

Probably, they didn’t use dkms to install their custom wifi driver. If that was the case, Debian and Ubuntu behave identically and the driver isn’t added if a newer updated kernel is installed.

Especially if you use Ubuntu’s 6-monthly releases.

If their driver was included in a user PPA, it’s gone after a Ubuntu release upgrade and the sources.list of the PPA is deleted.

  • It says it needs to refresh external IP but I only use it locally so I cant see why it would need this and I have location access allowed so it should know I am home.

The HA app on your smartphone needs to refresh its exernal ip address (not your pi). It still thinks it’s on mobile connection (or even is if your wifi coverage is odd) or at least in a different network than your pi running HA (vpn?).

For me, closing and re-opening the app works if I encounter that message.

  • MSI files are actually comparable to Linux packages, from what I understand, in that the program that does the installing (and which gets root/admin permissions for that) comes with the OS itself.

Neat. I’ve always wondered why e.g. 7zip is distributed as both, MSI and exe installer. Now that makes somewhat sense to me.
