It’s easy enough, it’s just a pain in the arse to update anything once changed. The simple answer is that most users never run into that situation. The average Bazzite user would still be on windows if it didn’t actively get in the way of just playing videogames, so they’re not even exploring the Bazaar, never mind compiling something from source. Steam and Firefox come preinstalled, they might install Discord and Heroic, and that’s them set. Immutability means they can just play their games without disturbances.
Bazzite users that do have problems with its immutability just move to a mutable distro, but most computer users who need a mutable distro are already on Linux. The new wave of OS migration is coming from Linux being easier to engage with than ever before and Windows being the worst it’s ever been, not people with a particular interest in the OS and computing. They want something that Just Works without the Apple price tag.

When I recommend Linux I always recommend Mint because it can be installed and set up by anyone who can read and follow half a dozen instructions. I don’t often recommend Linux though, because the average user won’t even read an error message before giving up.

2·19 days agoI’ve converted a few people to Linux who have no interest in the technical side just because Windows is that bad a few hours installing an OS has become far preferable to continuing to use windows. Something like Mint or Bazzite works much the same from their perspective, just without all the bloat slowing them down.

NGL I’m pretty sure they got an AI to write it and also told the AI it’s the Bene Gesserit.

1·2 months agoSee, you’re so deep in the sauce you’ve lost all perspective; A normal user isn’t getting as far as “type this incantation” - the one they won’t remember and will have to look up each time - because they’re going to give you a blank look when you tell them to open the terminal. I know this because I work with regular users ever day and get blank looks for much simpler questions.
windows users hate its forced updates fuckery
No, windows users hate the constant restarting for updates, if it all happened in the background they wouldn’t even notice. Just look at Mint.
Only thing anyone cares about is they know how to use it
They don’t even remember it, never mind know how to use it. That’s the whole point.
human language is not maths, any text can be understood very differently depending on a number of things
This is sophistic and stupid, humans don’t speak maths and “apt update -U” isn’t maths either. If you’re so desperate you’re reaching for “words don’t mean anything akshully” you already know you’re wrong.
give me more insights about my life
You are not a user, you are a power user like me and everyone else in this thread. Regular users don’t go online to discuss their OS. It’s the height of narcissism to think you’re the person being talked about here.

1·2 months agoThis thread is highlighting exactly why windows users think Linux is unusable - apt, pacman etc are all commands that require a minimal understanding of the terminal, and the average person does not have that. The answer isn’t “learn in your own time”, because that simply isn’t going to happen - they have no interest in the internals, how things work, they just want the end product.
Regular users just want it to update itself in the background or have a nice obvious “system update” button like Mint. The only thing they understand about “apt upgrade -u” is the word ‘upgrade’ - the rest might as well be ancient sumerian to them. Even remembering the short phrase is infinitely more complex than pressing a clearly labelled button. You will never convert a single user by trying to convince them to use any form of CLI over a GUI.

Linux Gaming@lemmy.world•Does Anyone Else Skip Processing Vulkan Shaders?English
5·3 months agoWas it CPU use/overheating? Steam will use all available resources doing the shader compilation, so when I start steam it jumps to around 100% use for a few minutes while compiling the shaders - I can use other programs in that time, but they’re noticeably more laggy.
I knew someone who used 2 spaces as their password (macos) which made me pretty mad because it’s weak as hell but it’s still unlikely anyone would guess it.
Sounds like you need to explain the difference between a serious tool and a serious looking tool. They can frump about it being weird but it is the foss option.
