  • I think we have way more ability to shape things then people believe. I remember at one point reddit said something like only 10% of users comment. Even less posted. Those were us. It was the nerds.

And no we weren’t short sighted because the early days of the internet everyone knew about data scarcity and how eventually the people who ruined cable and movies and every other media platform would come for the internet. There was so many people yelling that we needed to safe guard against that. But then Metallica sued Napster. Pewdiepie made millions. YouTube introduced ads. Instead of fucking them up, we all just went with it and forgot.

  • But it could have been different. I just think we were responsible for the culture. This stuff was inevitable. But we had the ability to shape the culture and instead they dangled a trinket in front of us and we forgot and they captured the new frontier like they did with others.

But now maybe if we can reflect, find out what was done, create awareness and vigilance to fight them in the next frontier whenever that is

  • WUT? Why?

Monetization is the root of a majority of our issues. Without monetizing you don’t get data scarcity, profile tracking, Meta, Cambridge analyticals and eventually data that feeds into the current political systems. There is a direct arrow to our current problems that goes from early days of the internet up through the monetization into data scarcity, data collection and all the marketing tools that eventually feed into modern propaganda. Safe guarding against scarcity by creating a hostile internet and culture to monetization would have prevented all of this going on currently. We can’t ever go back to that. We only ever had one chance. New frontiers do not show up every century. Our job was to keep the people who ruined everything else away.

  • Hear me out. From day one we all needed to collectively reject any effort to make any profit online. I don’t care if you built something cool, sold furry art or create some neat SAAS. Day one everything should have been stolen and replicated. Everyone should have been terrified of putting anything online out of fear that the monetary value would go to 0 as it was digitally recreated. We wouldn’t be in this situation today with Trump if we stood our ground. We’d have flying cars and world peace

  • I’ve been banned as well. I reset my IP and get back to their groups.

I don’t think we got pushed out so much as they made it hostile. They weaponized reporting. That’s fine. We can to except we can’t any longer since we didn’t organize well.

The glue being this is the network. I watched them connect their network pre 2016. I didn’t get at the time why it was happening. But you could see small random annoying fucks adding everybody. It turned into a wild organized information dissemination network. That’s how they weaponized reporting and made it appear that all these platforms were against the left.

But ask yourself why the effort. It’s a few accounts driving it all. It’s heritage TPUSA foundation interns spending 40 hrs a week using 4chan tactics. It’s going to get worse very quickly very soon with the election coming. We should be disrupting them, not rolling out a red carpet

  • It’s anger.

I went on Facebook earlier. I saw a post in a ‘Lord of The Rings’ group that shared a meme comparing orcs to immigrants. The whole joke was that the orc said “my son was born in the shire therefore he is a hobbit” because you know. Immigrants and refugees.

And then I saw a Bobs Burger group where the main post was the family holding up an anti Trans flag. This stuff is daily. The comments are much worse.

I see this everyday and I partially blame all of you here. So many of you here were the ‘exodus’ people. Convincing every liberal or leftist user to block and ban and remove ourselves from other areas online. Since then everything has become so much worse and even though responsibility is on the poster, I still hold so many of you responsible for quitting when you’re needed the most.

I come here to lemmy to see if anything crazy good is happening and it isn’t. Like 4chan launched whole ass investigations. A bunch of racist morons performed some of the greatest opsec in internet history. Lemmy is posting about beans and moths and I just don’t know what to do beyond being mad at you all.

And I get it, touch grass. But that doesn’t help when I log off and go out only to find that the hatred and toxicity from these major platforms is infecting the whole yard. There’s no escape. And you people who are suppose to be the resistance can’t be fucking bothered. You’re like lulled into this weird quiet existence only to be rallied under the most useless civic action imaginable every 2 years.

I just don’t know what to do other than be mad and angry.

We should be out there. Identifying these networks and the latest strategies being used to corrupt everything. We should be innovating and building protections with fediverse. Instead we got pro China moderation and censorship and bean memes. I don’t know. It’s just defeating.

  • No it isn’t. There is 100% propaganda and media targeting communities to spread it.

The Gap between peoples opinion towards AI in everyday life vs people on Lemmy is massive and a good indicator that Lemmy is astroturfed to be toxic towards it. People who are influenced cannot see it, outsiders can though. It’s like seeing right wingers talk about immigrants. They’ll never be able to see how their news and media influence them. That is their truth and it’s as true to them as hate towards AI is towards lemmings in places like c/technology

Look at the articles posted, the headlines, the appeals used, the comments. It has all the markers of an Astro turf campaign.
