My grievance isn’t so much with current household models with PCs sitting there running off solar (that’s starting to get very bloody specific though).
It’s actually my setup.

There was no consent, limited renumeration to individuals for using their work.
When I learn skills using books from the library, am I morally obligated to pay the authors a cut of my future earnings?

Here’s the thing, datacenters could be powersipping butterflies if they built solar farms and ground source heat pumps when they build out the data centers. But the Epstein class are too cheap, greedy and selfish to do that without being forced to. They are accustomed to having the government, directly or indirectly, lower their costs and guarantee them profits.

AI effectively raped and pillaged all human information
Copying information is not theft. Learning from copied information is not theft.
Theft is when you take something and deprive the owner of what you took. If I make a copy of your car, I am not stealing your car, you still have it and can drive it, wreck it, whatever.

Oh yeah, I’ve got a box of esp32s and mmwave sensors waiting for me to get my soldering iron out. I’m with you, they’re great. I suppose I could somehow figure out out how to do SDR with an ESP32, but I’ve got plenty of unfinished projects waiting for me as it is. ESPHOME makes edge devices so easy to create. And it gives me an excuse to do a little soldering and 3d printing.
The ESP32s are also really good for making old devices smart. One project in my queue is turning a bunch of air purifiers into smart devices that HA controls. They were super cheap and there’s nothing to them but a fan, and a filter but they’re loud. I’m going to make it so they only run when no one is in the room.

I was thinking the same thing. My path was self hosting on old desktops for the longest time then the pi came out and I ended up doing a birdnet project, then home assistant and now I’ve got about a half dozen data collectors on pi zero 2 w machines. They are pretty much set and forget. I use an orange pi for my instance of Solar Assistant because I wanted something that was not affected by anything but the network and the inverter and I know how rock solid these little machines are.
But in the last few years I’ve started embracing docker and NUCs and have pulled apps off Synology, making it just a file server at this point.
So technically I have more raspberry pis than anything else but they are really just edge devices, except for Home Assistant. And it will probably stay that way until there is a good reason to switch. I don’t see that happening for years.

I get a lot of help using LLMs.

:) Yeah I realized that after I hit send. I have been using clonezilla for years. It’s my favorite way to do full backups.

Thanks for the suggestion. I’ll have to dig into this. I have no qualms about pulling my HD from the laptop and cloning it, so I should be able to try a bunch of different methods until it works.
For the stuff I need to do on my laptop, RDP is all I need so it can sit on a server in the basement waiting for me to start it up when I need it.

Back in the early 2000’s I started playing with Linux on old machines and have used Linux on an off since. Now I only have one Windows laptop that I need for a few very specific things and it’s Linux for any backend stuff. I’ve got pi’s, nucs and a NAS, all Linux now.
I am so grateful for all the hard work people have put in over the last two decades making sure we can step away from Windows without having to go to the Apple or Chrome walled gardens. I’ve made a career working in the Microsoft stack and I’m so done with them.
Now if I could just figure out how to turn my windows laptop into a VM on my ProxMox machine.

I’ve been running birdnetpi on a raspberry pi 3 for years. It runs very well on this modest hardware. I also run birdnet-go in a docker container and use my reolink security cameras for the RSTP audio feed to that instance.
There are all sorts of AI/ML models available that can run on smaller hardware. But they are usually very specific and not general purpose, like the LLMs.
Whoosh!
