I have about 750GB of irreplaceable files on my server so I want a really solid history. A couple of days backup is no where near enough to give me peace of mind 😅

Ah yeah makes sense if it’s not just for storing an offsite copy of backups like mine is.
Is using a VPS cost effective compared to uploading to object storage?
I use rclone to sync backups to Backblaze object storage. I find it hard to believe a VPS would be cheaper, considering the disk space on those can be very expensive compared to object storage.
I guess OPs question is more about what makes you comfortable.
Is your drive only big enough for 2 backups or is it big enough for hundreds? If it was half that size would you still be happy with the number of backups? A quarter of the size?
Back when I used OneDrive, it deleted an important but seldom used folder. It just wasn’t there anymore. No one noticed for 6 months, but luckily I had kept a backup each month so could restore it easily.
3 weeks is definitely not long enough for me to notice something missing, if it’s just a random chunk of my 700GB of important stuff. E.g. if a folder of my kids photos from 5 years ago suddenly disappeared, I probably wouldn’t notice it for months but would be devistated to find it missing when I eventually went looking for it.
I have too (uBlock Origin)! On chrome as I’m not allowed Firefox. But when I flick through the chrome store, almost all extensions are blocked. It’s like it was a deliberate decision to let us have it, which is considering the maturity of the organisation in other ways.
However no one who uses adblock should be using Facebook either
If you ask me for help with your computer, whether you’re my mother, mother in law, or uncle, if I had to open your browser at some point then I’m gonna install uBlock Origin. It’s unfortunately the price you have to pay for my help.
What I’m getting at is I’ve installed it on many people’s computers even if they are regular Facebook users.
Oh I am sure there are differences. I also recently found that the fireworks rockets aren’t implemented in Mineclonia (I found a issue in the bug tracker and a PR that was never merged where they talk about how it’s hard to do in the Luanti engine), but for the most part I’ve just been able to look up the Minecraft wiki. I bought and played Minecraft when it was in Alpha, so my knowledge is a bit out of date 😆.
I play Mineclonia with my kids. They are reasonably young still, so we play in creative mode and build great things together. I’m running a local server so they can all join together and work together.
I didn’t find out about Asuna until we were well into our world, so while I also have an Asuna world set up we haven’t really used it. I will admit that it’s very helpful to just be able to search up the Minecraft wiki to see how things work for Mineclonia.
What’s up? Not Grafana. I did
docker compose pullon the stack (without version pinning) then recreated the containers, and now it’s fucked. Or maybe it’s not because the logs are fine but it only serves the web app but 404s on any connection to the Grafana backend. Now I need to do some investigation into any recent changes to try to work out what’s going wrong.

3·3 months agoThe start menu was the beginning of the atrocious thing we have today, but right click on it, and you got a quick access menu to everything from a terminal shell to settings to actual shutdown options. It still exists in some form today.

10·3 months agoIf memory serves me correctly, Windows 8.1 introduced the right-click-on-start menu, arguably the best Windows start menu there ever was.
Ah I just assumed because they all look the same, but maybe you’re right!
Yeah I guess so, but every site seems to be a Shop App now so it’s hardly more than one company anyway 😅
Who is behind it and how do you know they are trustworthy? I wasn’t able to find much info but it seems it’s just some company (not a non profit / charity or anything). I know they have paid plans but it seems they also have an incentive or at least an ability to sell your purchase data?
Yip. It might not have been clear but my point was that if you have a SearXNG instance set up and running well, then Kagi may well not be worth the cost since you’ve already got most of its strengths.
If you’re there with Searx then it’s pretty similar to how Kagi works. Kagi sends requests to various search providers and has some of its own index then shows results based on the various sources.
I found Searx/Searxng slow, 5-6 seconds per query (to get a response from each source), though it seems others have it working faster. Might have been some IP or rate limiting issue.
Kagi has easy ways to raise/lower rankings and users can report AI slop pages to have them removed, but all in all Searx gives pretty good results.
I’m using ntfy for notifications. I have some other notifications go through it too so it’s not only used for that.
I guess I just feel like if I need to know something (something is offline etc) then I need a notification, I don’t want to have to be checking a dashboard. I use Uptime Kuma for this.
I see your point with Jellyfin, but I also have the clicks to find active streams as muscle memory and it’s not needed that often so I don’t think I’d go setting up a dashboard just for that.

I have Nextcloud on my server which stores all those documents and photos etc. I have nightly offsite backup as well as backing up to a local borg repo on a separate drive.
But as it’s that important to me, I also do a once-yearly backup of non-encrypted files to M-Disc, with two copies, one stored at my mother’s house. This way if my house burns down and I’m inside it, my family can still get (most of) the precious memories without needing to know how to access a borg repo and without having to know how to download from Backblaze object storage.
I’m just a little bit paranoid about losing things after that one time I dragged from a USB stick to my computer and when it was done moving the files they were all corrupt, and didn’t exist on the USB stick anymore either. Thanks Windows, a whole holiday of photos gone.
