Someone has been creating open source clones of the most popular industry standard programs that have been enshitified to oblivion like Adobe Photoshop and Microsoft Office. They’re free and open source. I don’t think they’re nearly as bad as what the meme suggest. They do work from what I can tell although some features appear to be missing. And since they’re open source if anything needs fixed it will be fixed in the future.

I have played around in it for a few minutes and so far I’m impressed. The file size is tiny by modern standards. It loads super fast, is responsive, much better than the enshitified crap that is the “real” MS Word from what I can see. It is missing some of the more advanced features but most people won’t be using them. What’s there seems to be functional enough that a lot of people wouldn’t even see a drawback.

I played around with the photoshop clone as well. I’m not 100% familiar with the modern photoshop since I use Krita for most of my needs but I’ve been able to do a few basic things to test out like drawing, filling, transforming an image, warping text and things like that and haven’t found anything broken so far.

I hate AI but anything that pries away the enshitifying grip the likes of Adobe, Microsoft and Autodesk have on the industry I’ll welcome.

My B580 works just fine for games. If anything, in Linux at least, it’s NVidia’s drivers that are absolute shit and problem-prone

In my area at least Intel’s B580 hasn’t risen a penny since its release. Why is no one talking about it?

I wasn’t talking about browser-based games. The middle click pasting makes the middle mouse button unusable in games at least in my distro (Fedora). Disabling it in the DE settings fixed that issue which was separate from the annoyance of accidentally pasting text while scrolling, which was also solved by disabling it in Firefox.

For me a quick web search turned up plenty of posts from people complaining about the desktop environment provided way of disabling it not working. Most of them had no replies. Others had tone-deaf replies suggesting to turn it off using the option they said wasn’t working. And finally a few suggested to run a variety of shady scripts that mess with the guts of the system with no way of undoing the if they break something.

And I’m so happy for you that it works for the games you play.

Actual solution found:

After a much deeper search, I’ve found out that buried in there was the actual answer I was looking for: The Linux version of Firefox is independently applying a middle click paste on its own regardless of whether you’ve had it disabled in your desktop environment options or not. For those who are struggling with this: You can disable it in about:config by changing “middlemouse.paste” to false. If you’ve also disabled in your desktop environment settings, it should be gone for good.

One thing I wish Linux got its shit together for is the middle click paste selected function. I tried to like it, but if you work on editing a long text this shit is downright a liability. I was working on a 20 000 word essay and when I thought I was done and was about to submit it I realised that when I was scrolling through it to work on it the center click was accidentally clicked a few times and it pasted random bits of text throughout.

This also makes center click unusable in video games.

I want the ability to turn that shit off. Ctrl C and Ctrl V is plenty practical already. KDE has an option to disable it but it doesn’t actually work.

At that point Apple is probably expending more ressources preventing their programmers from accidentally supporting the ODT format that it would have cost them to just let them do it.

Started with Tumbleweed. Got a little tired with the daily GBs of updates and slow zypper downloading everything piece meal. Settled to Fedora but if I had to switch again and Slowroll came out of beta I’d give it a good look.

In 3 years:

Mint > OpenSUSE Tumbleweed > Fedora

Very happy with Fedora right now. If I ever had to switch again, maybe CachyOS. But not worth wiping and reconfiguring everything just for that. If RedHat pulls a Canonical though, definitely.

I mean normal printers will not let you print money. That’s what gave these idiots the idea to begin with I’d wager. But there are orders of magnitude in difference in difficulty between making a piece of software capable of autonomously recognizing a few existing designs of dollar bills and one that can tell a working gun part that can take a shape that can vary almost infinitely from other objects that can also take nearly infinite shapes.

With enshitification nowadays, the fact that they’re nonprofit is the reason why the software is good quality.
