  • I get what you’re saying and mostly agree but not quite as strongly as you see it.

For at least the comment I responded to, pirating everything without nuance doesn’t make sense. If no game creators make any money, there won’t be game creators. Companies like EA, Gearbox, Rockstar, etc that have shown shitty business practices to their employees and customers, yea, fuck em. Smaller studios that aren’t wrapped up in controversy and need to sell products to survive aren’t the same.

For the other things you mentioned, like Target and Starbucks, I agree that the messaging needs to be strong and concerted to truly be effective. However, I don’t think those examples are the best because I do think there’s been a strong message and it has been at least semi effective. Starbucks is frequently in the news and target has had a notable drop in business that the CEO has acknowledged. Idk what the long term effects of these boycotts will be, but they’re not nothing. For me, I do it mostly for my own moral obligations rather than as a large protest. I don’t drink Starbucks short of it being the only coffee shop open sometimes in an airport, so that one’s easy. I don’t go to Target for their dei rollback initiative. I can also say that of the mega stores out there that Target is one of the better options compared to say Amazon and Walmart. I’ve mostly just reduced my shopping and found alternatives that work for me.

I do what’s right for me, and if the topic arises, I will share my views with others that may or may not sway their opinions. I don’t stay silent of the issues, but they’re not so significant to me that they prioritize my time away from other matters.

  • Do you have a constant stream of cars driving by your window 24 hours a day? If you did, maybe you’d feel different. Also, lots of people do want to ban not just loud cars, but all cars. I had loud cars and trucks. If I’m inside and hear a loud diesel truck with straight pipes and aftermarket loud exhaust, it pusses me off. I absolutely think that shit should be illegal, and I’m certainly not alone.

All of that aside, these people lived where they live before the DCs got built and now their lives are negatively affected because of it. The DCs should have to make every concession to not negatively affect residents. If that means spending billions more on technology to block noise, close loop cooling systems, and prevent localized increases in air temperature, then they should have to do that. If they can’t, then they don’t deserve to exist. The life and comfort of any individual citizen is more important in every way over the existence of any AI data center.

  • There are the obvious options that can’t work due to the general mode anti cheat software, but over the past 1.5 years, I’ve only had a couple of steam games where I had to tweak something because it didn’t work out the gate. Every major title I’ve played worked first try.

I tried Linux a couple times over the bast 20+ years and it was still too raw for me. Now, it just works for me. I’m by no means a Linux guru but I am a computer smart guy. I setup a laptop with Mint for my brother who knows the bare minimum about computers, and he’s had no issues using it. The progress made over the past decade has been wildly positive.

  • I went straight from windows to Arch. I had used Ubuntu for a couple of weeks 10+ years ago. The arch wiki is a great resource and I was able to follow it to get up and running. However, there are things that aren’t detailed enough (like literally hold your hand) on some things the wiki expects you to know. Now, maybe starting with Arch is not the best path, so that’s probably mostly on me. I think that since there are so many different ways to do things, that following some of the instructions can be difficult for a user’s specific case. Boot loaders where my biggest hangup early on since I didn’t want to use Grub. Modifying boot loaders, setting up pacman hooks, learning and configuring different file systems, and learning how the config and system files is tough, and the wiki has all of the info to do it, but it’s not always linear. I wish there were more practical code examples and/or short videos showing exactly what files to modify and how to do it right.
