  • Transcoding would not be a violation, but in order to rip it in the first place, you had to bypass technological restrictions built into the disc and the drive. Under section 1201 of the DMCA, the creation or sharing of software that can do thatis a felony punishable by half a million dollars and six months in prison for a first offense.

  • Nah. Rust is challenging to write because Rust is challenging to learn. There are a lot of concepts that exist in few if any other programming languages that you have to get your head around before you can write really any nontrivial Rust code.

When I started learning Lua, I already knew Python and Java. It took me about a week to pick it up before I was writing proper coroutines. When I started learning Rust, I really struggled, for over a month – Rust is a lot – but then everything just kinda clicked, and I got it, and suddenly the borrow checker was a wind at my back instead of something I would do daily battle with.

I am a twink, but I think that is entirely orthogonal to me being good at Rust. Anyone can pick it up. You just have to be very patient and very eager to learn.

  • the kernel itself does not depend on glibc. that is ridiculous. if it did, it would not be able to mount the root filesystem, since the glibc it needed to do so would be on the filesystem it was about to mount.

what does depend on glibc is virtually every other program on the system, including systemd.

the kernel would boot but it would not get much farther than that. the kernel would start systemd as pid 1, systemd would try to load glibc and fail, systemd would exit, and the kernel would immediately panic because pid 1 died
