422·18 days agoAs much as I like seeing people making the jump, I’m seriously surprised how many people are still putting up with microsoft. Like yes, I get it, your grandma won’t care, but I know people who are absolutely capable of installing another OS but still stick with windows, even tho there’s not a lot of software that just won’t run on linux. Some games like fortnite or league, yeah, but other than that … it’s just weird. Especially because they keep yapping about something breaking or not working all the time.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Why use Proxmox over Podman or Docker?English
7·24 days agoI use proxmox for basically anything in my homelab, but there’s no particular reason. I use it because it does what I need. It supports VMs in case I need a bit more control over what runs in the system (like a Windows VM) and it supports LXCs that fundamentally work like docker with less configuration steps. It provides a nice webUI if I need to check up on some things and an API so I can orchestrate all my systems with terraform.
It does the job and I never saw a reason to switch away from it.

linuxmemes@lemmy.world•You don't actually have to be 1337 to use arch(install)btwEnglish
2·1 month agoUsing a distro that’s a derivation of arch is perfectly fine. Cachy does all the configuration for you. SteamOS runs on arch aswell and is absolutely targeted towards non-technical people.
Plain arch does nothing of that. You have to install every package yourself. Want a network connection? You need something like NetworkManager for that. Wdym, a desktop? You have to install that. Oh, you don’t want your desktop to start via something like
startxin the CLI? Well, you better go take a look at something like lightdm or sddm. Most non-technical people that have no interest in learning that will not be able to use arch properly.

linuxmemes@lemmy.world•You don't actually have to be 1337 to use arch(install)btwEnglish
4·1 month agoOh I get it, dw. But I often see memes like that used as “excuses” for technically illiterate people who want to be cool and use arch without understanding it. Like, it’s not about gatekeeping, it’s about people using software they are unable to handle and use, not because they’re dumb, but usually because there’s just no interest in learning these things. That’s the whole reason we had this AUR problem a few weeks ago, and that just kinda pissed me off so I’m reacting a bit allergic to these kind of memes.

You don’t have to, no. But you should. Not understanding how a system works that you fundamentally completely set up yourself is setting you up for massive failure. That’s like using unreal engine and only relying on blueprints without understanding C++.
If you want Arch without knowing shit about arch, there’s plenty of distros you can use. Stop trying to be cool. Pick something that fits your use case.

Linux Gaming@lemmy.world•How big of a problem is Denuvo on Linux?English
7·1 month agoIt’s generally never a problem. The only time where it does become a problem is if the game doesn’t run on proton immediately as every time you switch the proton version, it counts as a new system and you will quickly run into a 5 game activiations per day limit.
However, if it works without tinkering, it has never been an issue for me. But then again, I don’t buy a lot of denuvo-affected games. I think RE9 and Pragmata shipped with Denuvo, and those were the last AAA games I played, and both of them worked flawlessly.

PC Master Race@lemmy.world•Report: Nvidia acquires Hugging Face for $12.9 billionEnglish
13·2 months agoWell. Shit. Guess we need a new open source model library
Arch was the “elite” distro. Most people who weren’t already very comfortable with the terminal were even able to use arch properly. Stuff like archinstall didn’t exist back then and those that did were way inferior than what we have today. So using arch was like a “badge of honor” of sorts for many people who thought using it made them superior to disgusting ubuntu or mint users with their GUI installer.
It’s just classic gatekeeping that you’ll see in basically everything that comes with a passionate community.
Where are those people whose arch installs break after every second update? I don’t think I had a single problem with arch that I wasn’t responsible for. Hell, I had more problems with mint on my girlfriends PC than the arch machines that I’m running.

136·2 months agoEnabling EAC is a simple checkbox you click in the dashboard when you build the executable afaik. How can this be so hard?
Honestly, since I switched to vim and got through the first month of “why the fuck am I doing this to myself”, I just can’t go back. Especially once you get to customizing it, installing plugins, themes etc … it’s better than any IDE out there.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Can the M.2 slot in my Dell Optiplex 3070 micro be used for ethernet?English
3·3 months agoIn general, it should work. Since M.2 slots are usually wired to PCIe and networkcards will usually also be attached to PCIe, I don’t see why not. However, personally I’d probably not use something from aliexpress for this purpose.

Linux Gaming@lemmy.world•GOG confirm they are working towards GOG Galaxy on LinuxEnglish
13·3 months agoI’m wondering how long it can take to just port an existing launcher to linux? If I can remember right, the interface, store etc. is all just the embedded website, apart from certain elements. That’s something a halfway talented developer could probably do within two weeks tops.

linuxmemes@lemmy.world•This guy’s a real Upstart if you ask meEnglish
917·3 months agoIt’s popular to hate systemd. Just as it’s popular to hate PHP. It makes people feel like they’re part of an “elite group” that are above these things. Most of the time, people can’t even explain why they hate it. Just ask someone why he hates systemd and in 95% of all cases, you won’t get a straight answer, except, of course: “It ViOlAtEs LiNuX pHiLoSoPhY” yes timmy and how does that affect you while browsing and playing games, because that’s all you do on your PC.
I’m not saying that there are no reasons to dislike systemd for some people. There might be a handful of them who genuinely dislike it and have justified reasons for it. However, an overwhelming majority of the people that hate it don’t even have a fucking clue what it is, let alone why it’s dislikeable, they just read on twitter or reddit that it sucks. And that’s it. It’s a bit like a big streamer saying: “Game XYZ is shit” and a majority of that streamers following will think its shit.
It’s not, no matter how much you wanna believe it. You just don’t know what a monopoly is at this point.
