For cybersec classwork purposes we use Kali in a VM (I use virtualbox specifically), and today my display driver broke for no fucking reason lol. I wanted to fix it in TTY, but my VM had like no storage space for updates or anything. So I tried to use gparted on my VM to give it more space and I just. Could not get the new space past the swap partition and deleted it, but it fucked everything up so I just made a fresh VM. 😅

I daily drive Fedora though and it works like a dream 98% of the time. I had bluetooth hate me about a year or two ago because I didn’t do a power cycle after a kernel update (didn’t know that was a thing tbh), and I had WiFi crap put on me once only to mysteriously come back 2 reboots later.

Edit: Love that someone just downvoted me without their explanation as to why. Getting mad that people might have an issue one or twice with Linux and then not saying shit to help them is literally why people feel put off from it. Genuinely amazing that some people think like this.

  • I kinda started by rawdogging it, but it was just because I wanted to go further into my privacy journey and use Linux to get away from Windows telemetry. I knew to start on an easy kinda foolproof distro, so I picked Fedora Silverblue cause it’s atomic. But after figuring out it’s REALLY hard to tinker with when trying to use some slightly obscure software/make certain tricks work, I just switched to reg Fedora and never looked back.

A few months later I took a Linux course at my college, and I loved it, although it focused more on Cybersecurity and administration stuff rather than just basic Linux usage and how to get around. We we’re solely in the terminal, nothing about LibreOffice or the like. It was also a Kali VM we were using, which makes sense for the purposes of the class.

But taking that class really made it easier for me to be confident with the CLI, and it also helped give me Ubuntu/Debian knowledge to make managing my Proxmox easier. So while I could’ve definitely “rawdogged it”, having a structured environment to fuck up in but also get someone else to help you was great.

  • literally the only reason I ever boot into WIndows now is for doing online exams for college that use spyware shit and throws a hissy fit if you’reon linux (both browser and app… well, if you can even get the testing app on Linux…)

I don’t want to tinker around with something that determines my entire grade nor do I want to take my test on a school device because there might be files and programs I need, so I just switch to my Windows partition for that awful 5 hrs or so. But once I graduate that shit is getting nuked.
