As of a few days ago, Outlook Classic started shoving AI even harder down my throat at work. Aside from the usual, non-removable copilot button on the ribbon, they now have two new prompts right in your face:

That’s 4 places to get copilot in one screen, 5 if you count the key combination they offer. I tried to get rid of these new ones, even as far as using GPOs, to no avail. I read a while back that the take-up on copilot had been much lower than they expected, so it seems that they’re desperate to increase user engagement with it, hence pushing it at every possible opportunity.

My comment was a hot take / snark without reading the article. I’ve edited my post since I read the article and read more about WinUI, prompted by the comment from @blackbeans@lemmy.zip (thanks!). This X post says that they’re going to include the Start menu in this overhaul, so that’s good news. The relative performance of Linux desktop must be making them sweat. Competition in technology is a good thing.

Oh, no, they’re going to shove even more javascript code into the OS, aren’t they? They must have loved the Windows 11 start menu that uses JS and famously spikes the CPU when you just click the start button and they want more of that.

That was a hot take without reading the article. It sounds like they’re actually trying to fix the problem I described, including the Start Menu. Good for them!
