You can always have a partition for your data separate from your boot partition. Then you just mount that on any distro you run and you’re good to go. I have a drive from when I used Windows for media, and I’ve never reformatted it. Your distro doesn’t care where data came from, as long as it can read it.

2·29 days agoIt’d be like Legos, but with less pain when you step on it!
The title of this post is like the FromSoft game we have at home.

Linux Gaming@lemmy.world•For my birthday today, I played morrowind, oblivion (original), and Skyrim in 2 hour intervals, in order, repeating the cycle.i had a ton of fun. All on LinuxEnglish
18·2 months agoI love that for Morrowind even the guide is called The Morrowind Prophecies. Everything about Morrowind was made with care and an attempt to make the world feel real. The later games can be fun, but none of them do this to the same degree.
Also, in my experience, Linux is much better at handling legacy titles than Windows is at this point. It’s weird, but one more advantage for Linux!

5·2 months agoAbsolutely. It’s stupid that they maybe possibly can. It’s being tested in the courts. They definitely are allowed to abuse it to some extent, but maybe not like they are with these cameras. It doesn’t make any sense either way though.
The way phone data works, they have to get a warrant. They aren’t legally allowed to obtain it from phone companies until they have one, even if the company is more than happy to provide it. How this doesn’t automatically apply in the same way to these cameras is crazy.

14·2 months agoI’m pretty sure part of why this is all being done is because the police can’t legally do this. A third party company can though, and police can purchase access (in their theory at least, though this is being tested).

Linux Gaming@lemmy.world•How big of a problem is Denuvo on Linux?English
5·2 months agoI got a free game on Epic at one point that had it. It runs, but changing Proton versions makes it view it as a new machine, and it’ll eventually stop you from playing. I think it’s time limited, so eventually you can continue.
Basically, you’re gambling that the game runs fine with whatever Proton version you start with, or you may be in for a bad time. I don’t recommend it.
The reason tutorials are always based on terminal commands is because it’s much harder to describe directions for a GUI, and it’s also a lot more prone to change. When the command is just a single line, not images or dependencies, that’s obviously better.

2·2 months agoYeah, after watching it, I mostly disagree with the Squad comparisons. It has FOBs, building, and logistics, like Squad, but most of the gameplay is pretty casual and very similar to Battlefield.
The weapons feel like Battlefield, with low recoil and everyone using full auto always. It also seems you’re encouraged to just lob rockets and tank rounds at helicopters flying around. It’s very Battlefield. You’re a little slower than Battlefield, but there’s no stamina or anything. It’s very much an evolution of Battlefield, with some milsim elements, probably the most obvious being that you can’t spawn on your squad, so respawns are expensive in time.
(It actually reminds me a lot of M.A.G., but there’s very few who remember that.)

31·2 months agoI don’t think it’s an “exclusivity deal.” This is what they’ve always done. It’s to make some consumers purchase the game multiple times. It’s just scummy behavior that they’ve been allowed to get away with.

3·3 months agoI literally said it wasn’t a clone. The comment I replied to said they had nothing in common, which is totally wrong.
Anyway, the phrase “[thing]-clone” has a long history in gaming where it doesn’t literally mean a clone. What we know as the FPS genre was originally called “Doom clones” where Wikipedia literally redirects “Doom clone” to “first person shooters”. It’s the same for the [thing]-likes", like souls-likes. Most of them share little with souls games, but that’s still the term we use. I, and most gamers probably, would read “Battlefield clone” to mean a game that takes many components of Battlefield to make a new game, which this does. It’s not an exact copy, but it’s working with a lot of the same recipe.

3·3 months agoGood to hear. I much prefer the milsim pacing. I was also very disappointed a few months ago when they said Linux support wasn’t planned, and I thought it wouldn’t run. It’s nice to see that isn’t the case.

51·3 months agoJust because there are differences doesn’t mean there aren’t similarities. Another comment said it’s closer to Squad, which sounded like a contradiction but proves the point. Squad evolved off of Battlefield. It has many similarities, even though it is a very different game, and most Battlefield players would hate it.

Linux Gaming@lemmy.world•WARDOGS NOT officially supported from the start, dev fumbledEnglish
32·3 months agoSure, it’s got that aspect, though if you consider it close to Squad, a relatively slow-paced mil-sim, which prioritizes teamwork and not individual play, and not Battlefield, then you’re crazy. Squad has Battlefield DNA in it, so if it’s like Squad then it’s also like Battlefield. It’s far closer to BF though, from what I’ve seen, in my opinion, and I’m an avid Squad player.

2·3 months agoGood to know. I was expecting it to not work with their AC yet. Honestly, I don’t care that much if it is officially supported, as long as it runs. I’d like official support, but most games don’t officially support Linux and they work fine.

111·3 months agoThat’s dumb. It shares a lot of traits with Battlefield. It’s large scale, arcadey vehicles (I assume), arcadey run-and-gun gameplay it seems, and many other things, like the style (not realism, but like an enhanced over-the-top realism).
Sure, it isn’t a clone of Battlefield, I agree, but it’s fairly similar to Battlefield. It’s clearly targeting the same players. The biggest difference, in my opinion, is that it isn’t EA. I don’t know much about this studio, but they can’t be as bad as EA.

Linux Gaming@lemmy.world•Devs from upcoming game WARDOGS (a Battlefield like game) confirmed they’re working on Proton support and will update once it’s ready.English
1·3 months agoThe application almost certainly runs. It’s the anti-cheat that causes issues 99.99% of the time at this point. It relies on certain things being available in the system, and it needs special support to work on Linux (and some features won’t work, like having kernel level access to read memory).
If you’re using a mainstream AC solution, they’ve already done most of the work. It often just needs to be enabled and rebuilt with Linux support turned on. If it’s custom, then there’s a lot more to do.
Yeah, I need to switch it at some point, but it’s a 4TB HDD, and my other drives are smaller. I need to delete a bunch of stuff to be able to reformat it.
