We’re still talking about marginal, unnecessary things, but with a “smart” coffee pot, you could in theory start the pot when you’re a few minutes away from home, if you like some after work. A pot connected to something like home assistant (which I have no idea if it exists) can brew the pot only on your workdays, or you can start it after you leave the bedroom, regardless of time. You could probably do quite a few “neat” things.

People still try to claim Linux is complicated and has a lot of unnecessary steps to install stuff and it just isn’t true for vast majority of people installing the vast majority of stuff.
It doesn’t and you know that.
From there you click Firefox, then you click the download link it gives you on the next page, that downloads a file (still not installed) or takes you to an app store if you’re on a phone, you run that file or click install on the app store to actually install the application.
That’s a shame, I liked that game.

I self hosted matrix for probably a year after me and some people started getting spam on telegram. It was the first thing I really self hosted beyond jellyfin (and plex before that) so I didn’t really fully understand what was I doing and that could have affected things.
I had a few hurdles that made it not work out for me and my friends/family. First, the end to end encryption, one of the main “selling” points I feel, makes it complicated to sign in for people who don’t care about any of that. You end up getting a code to save, I had to verify them at first, we’d have times where something still showed unverified, etc.
Just started hosting nextcloud recently and I’m also seeing the notification issue, but at least you just sign up and start using it.
I also noticed in matrix we never got notifications for emoji reactions (which we all use with each other). Other notifications were relatively solid though.
I never got webrtc and some stuff working and I sort of lost steam trying, so we could use element or fluffychat but not element X and we couldn’t have big group calls or anything like that. That’s probably on me though, but in fairness nextcloud aio just has a checkbox and all that stuff works.
Since I’m the only dork in my little group interested in this stuff I abandoned matrix when nobody used it.

I almost broached the topic with my mother (60s) the other day about moving to Linux. She’s got a computer that sucks, and my other brother got windows 11 on there so it’s exceptionally slow. I was helping her with some documents and printing and whatnot so I started asking a couple of the questions you would ask, like what she uses the pc for. She uses this tax software and “needs” it installed (as opposed to the browser version) so I didn’t continue down that road but I’m pretty sure it’d blow her mind how much better this thing would run with mint. And other than that tax software, it’d be nearly identical for her, open a browser and go to the thing.
I just learned about “man thing” in terminal a couple days ago. I had no idea they’re kept in that folder.
I use the libredirect extension so that when I end up with a reddit result in searches it redirects. But yeah most of the time it doesn’t work now.
